Hi just picked up another SB. I wanted one as a back up but this looks a lot older than my other green rover.

Any idea of the age?

The clutch needed adjusting and it looks like they have painted the engine black.
The other weird thing is that the height adjuster has the spring on the wrong side of the frame. Any ideas on how to take the adjuster handle off?
Cheers

Hi boeing, Your machine would perhaps be an early Series 2 (twin rail engine deck) with the 2 brass ID Plates. As you may know dating a Scott Bonnar exactly is nigh on impossible, but we can give an approximate with the date of manufacture of the Briggs engine (if it is the original engine) wink

Could you please post the whole string of numbers stamped into the metal air cowling...These are the Model, Type and Code....See the pic here: [Linked Image]

The front roller adjusting handle can easily be removed by firstly removing the circlip from the bottom of the handle.....then unscrew the handle anti-clockwise and off it comes. If it is really tight, put a few drops of Penetrene or oil down the centre hole and wait a little for it to soak into the threads....this should facilitate easy removal.

For the front roller tube, a new one can be fabricated from a piece of suitable metal tube. Try an exhaust fitting retailer, they may have a scrap piece to suit...Just take the plastic roller ends with you to check for size. wink

I think this is a replacement engine by the look of the numbers. Thanks for the advice on the adjuster screw, this was easily fixed.

With regard to adjusting the clutch, if you adjust it too far in will it result in the thrust pad melting?
From what I have read you need to have a small gap between the pad and the clutch housing.

Hi Boeing,

Well that is most definitely a replacement engine as the twin Brass plated chassis units all had Kirby engines fitted. The Briggs engines didn't come on line for the 17 and 20 inch models until the Red and Silver Ally plated machines were released.

Regarding the clutch adjustment, when the cutter is engaged there should be slight clearance between the the inner cone and the black thrust pad, this will avoid it melting as you suggest.

Cheers,
BB
