I have a Stihl HS-80 hedge trimmer (ex council via auction) that looks in good condition but won't start. Fuel and carby are clean, good spark but no sign of life, not even with Aerostart. This is only the second machine in twenty years that I have not been able to fire up. Can the ignition timing get skewiff or is there some foible with Stihl motors?

Terry,
Can you have a look at a couple of things?

1. Remove the muffler and see if you have any markings (scoring) on either the piston or cylinder.

2. Check that you have spark at the plug.

3. Check the fuel filter in the tank to see if it shows signs of dirt.

4. Never use Aerostart on a two stroke mower as it does not have any lubricant and will damage the engine.

Answer these few questions and I should be able to give you some answers.

You got it in one with the scoring on the piston. The rings were not free to move. New piston, cylinder etc approx $350. Spare parts anyone?
