How much friction does the shaped wire doo-dah (highly technical description) need to have on the white gear shaft in a briggs vertical pull starter. Mine often seems to skip / not engage when attempting to pull start? Rope ans spring are in pristine condition. Seems to work perfectly when off engine.

If it works off the engine, but not on it, you should consider the possibility of minor damage to the entry side of the teeth of either the pinion or the ring gear. In the case of the ring gear, remember that the engine's rest position is not entirely random: it won't stop during the latter part of the compression stroke, for example, but may be particularly likely to stop near the beginning of it.

The repair manual only has has following info referring to the fiction link. Repair Manual # 270962

Clean all dirty or oily parts and check link for proper friction. Link should move gear to both extremes of its travel. If not, replace link assembly

HI guys,
Not sure if I can help you but maybe you can help me. I have taken a vertical pull starter off from a Rover ES200 mower fitted with a B&S model 92508 vertical pull start.
A similar problem to yours that the starter does not work as well as it should.
I do not have a manual or a picture of it to work off but I have a part that I do not have a place for which was rattling around inside the housing. I guess if it is meant to be there (not just thrown in there at some time) it would anchor the friction doo-dah somewhere, but the only place I can find where it might fit is under the pull rope guide but it is too long and hits the rope spool.

It may be bent?
Hopefully I have been successful in attaching the picture

Pity you are not closer, I have thrown out so many of those starters and there is still a few sitting here. I will have a look in the morning to see what the clip does or if yours is damaged

Thanks AVB,
You have come through in trumps again.
They must have been a little bent as I reassembled it (without having a good look at it before hand) and when it started I had a grinding noise. If it was not bent before it is certainly bent now. I have reassembled about 6 times and did some adjusting each time, ready for a trial run but won't get back to it until later in the week.
Thanks again

G'day Byomarimba
ODK is lucky to have AVB's expertise.
Note he is from Tennessee.
I hope he did okay after the terrible weather there.

Hi Jack,
Everyone with a Briggs is lucky to have AVB on the site. Starter worked perfectly after a few strategic bends.
Thanks again AVB, I suspect the engineer who designed that mechanism had a few late nights but don't knock it if it works.

Hey, Byomarimba your tagline reminds of the fellow that his new push mower quit running while cutting grass. He got so mad trying to start it he used a sledge hammer to get it attention. He was done he decoded to check the fuel tank.

Guess what the tank was empty but the mower never ran again. For the life me I don't know why. lol

And to CJ never got any of the storm just a sprinkle of rain that the ants had get their funnels out for a drink. Usually it the ones off the gulf coast that winds make this far inland. It is the twisters that I got to dodge.
