Hi all, I picked this up yesterday with the intention of using it to keep the grass in check while I take apart the Rover I posted about previously.

Haven't had much luck identifying it yet, so I'll put up some pics and seek your assistance.

The closest thing I can find to an identification is the 28"Model sticker on the back lower right. There are several indications that the machine shipped with a B&S motor. But it has a Honda GV400 power plant in it now that purrs like a kitten.

The belts are tired, the blades are notched and the steering is completely shagged. But it still runs and mows pretty well considering. So I'm excited about sorting it and putting it to work.

I figure if I could work out what model it is, that will make all the rest much easier. smile There is a neat little sticker on one side that lists the part numbers for the belts and blades, so thats a start.

That one is a 1970's 'Tractor-x', where x was the horsepower rating of the original engine. The power options were 5, 8, 10 and 11hp.
There were 'VE' [electric start] and 'VR' [recoil start] variants for all except the 8hp, which was recoil only.
Yours is a VR, as there is no battery compartment located below the steering wheel, or provision for one.

As you say, indications are that it was originally B&S powered, as this series all were. It's from early in the series, going by the cast alloy seat, which was a legacy from the first Greenfield model, the HD-5/8 series.

A downloadable parts list is HERE ; see if some of those belt/blade numbers match yours.

Cheers,
Gadge

Fantastic, thanks Gadge. I've cross referenced the numbers on the machine with the parts list and have narrowed it down to an 8-10 model.

It seems the first fun challenge will be to work out which vertical steering shaft to get. (if it needs one. I may get away with just the horizontal.) With the verts, they made a different one for the 5, 8 and 10-11 models. Fortunately the bushes are more universal fitments.

I was tempted to take it to a shop and have it sorted, but the ute blew a cv so I will just start disassembling it tomorrow.

I suspect that only the length of those vertical steering shafts would be different, due to differing bonnet heights of the models.
Might be worth checking the measurements with Greenfield, as you may have to contact them direct to determine parts availability in any case.

Cheers,
Gadge
