Changed the blades recently on my Victa and took the plate off to attach the blades....this went well. Now ....when I pull the cord to start the mower it kicks like a mule and nearly yanks my elbow from its socket. Somewhere in the process I have messed the firing up .....can anyone advise?

Is the washer under the blade plate nut the right way up and undamaged? Also the blade plate but needs to be centered, tight and not able to spin loosely from the crankshaft at all.

Also just to add to that, are they the right blades and not longer than the old blades?...and not getting caught on the base anywhere.
Also a picture might help with it as well.

Here for a good time, not a long time.

Yeah id have to strongly agree with MM ...Sounds like the blade plate is spinning. If the washer gets caught on the lip before it centres or reaches home, the blade carrier will not lock down and cause it to spin.

No blade plate at all will do this also, and a loose plate is even worse.

Taking the blade carrier off will not effect timing in any way.

Start again,Reset the plate and make sure its centered.

Well the good news is that my trusty Victa is alive and running smoothly now thanks to tightening the nut on the plate a little extra. Thank you all for the valuable advice as it has saved me some money and time. My local Stihl man wanted $250 to fix it, as he needed to pull it apart, this did'nt sound right so hi ho, hi ho its of to the internet I go.....glad I found this forum cheers
