What are the model numbers of the beast?
Might have points depending on the age and we can tell by the model number
Make sure that the coil kill wire isn't grounded to the engine
Cheers

As Mick said, we need the engine's Model, Type and Code numbers which are stamped on the cooling cowl. From that we can identify the engine precisely. Aside from whatever is wrong with the engine, it seems you probably have wiring errors on the mower, so we need to identify the machine. Please post pictures of it.

Here is the Illustrated Parts List for your engine: http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/Z6nlxBVJ1DajI.pdfHere is the Operator's Manual: http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/msozHP-K_ny7tH217FzoPu.pdfThe engine was made on 27 June, 1987, in Briggs' Plant 12, which has long since closed so I can't even tell you where it was located. Your engine was made after the introduction of Magnetron electronic ignition, so it has no breaker points. A small pickup in the ignition module triggers the ignition when the flywheel magnet is passing underneath it. Consequently only two wires will be coming out of your module: the high tension wire, and the kill wire. The kill wire is a thin black lead, which slides onto a spade connecter on the module. The sole purpose of this lead is to stop the engine by shorting out the ignition primary. Probably the most common cause of ignition failure on Briggs engines, is the kill lead becoming grounded due to a defect either in the black wire, or in the kill switch at the far end of the wire. This switch usually operates automatically when the speed control is put in the minimum speed position, at the opposite end of its movement from the maximum speed or choke position. The first test to make, after checking that the module is correctly installed, is to carry out a spark test with the kill wire disconnected at the module. However, first you need to verify that the module is grounded to the cylinder block, and is placed the correct distance from the flywheel. You should be barely able to fit a standard business card between the flywheel magnet and the metal yoke of the module. Do not test the ignition with the spark plug installed. If it starts, with the kill wire disconnected you will have no safe way to stop it.

I'll keep the thread open, noddy, so please come back when you've had a chance to work through those checks and tests.
We are always looking for ride-on manuals, especially for older models, so please send the one for your mower.

If you have spark with the kill wire disconnected, and no spark with it connected, the kill wire is grounded somewhere along its length. Did you have the speed control in the run or start position? If you had it in the stop position, the kill switch will have been closed, grounding the kill wire.
If there is no spark with the speed control in either run or start, there is a fault in the kill system. Essentially there are two things it could be. The speed control could be maladjusted, so the kill switch it closed when it shouldn't be, or the kill wire could be faulty: insulation worn through somewhere along its length, or one of the end terminals touching something it shouldn't touch.
To attach the owner manual to your post, first select "Switch to full reply screen" at the bottom of the posting box. Then you will see "Post Options" at the lower left of the screen, and you can select either Poll Manager or File Manager. Click on File Manager. You will then be able to attach a PDF copy of the manual to your post.
