Hi guys,

I am looking for the plastic cover that sits over the points/coil assembly at the front of the engine. In fact I am after two of them.

If you have a spare please send me a pm with your details and asking price.

Thanks & regards,

Hello AusAnzani,

I hope a member can help here.
I guess that cover never changed; given that the engine went through some technical changes:-

All very interesting.

G'day Jack, thanks for posting that pic. I hope it will help!

I've got 2 Gold Cheetah outboard motors fitted with lawn patrol engines of different years(6 bolt and 4 bolt crank cases if that makes sense)and one only severely damaged cover.

Will try fitting what's left of the cover to both and report back.

Thanks again.

I can now confirm that the cover fits both engine types mentioned above.

if anyone has a spare (or two), I'd certainly like to hear from you.

Thanks & Regards,

Every once in a while, a bit of good luck comes our way I guess.

Over the weekend I stumbled across a Lawn Patrol BMS10 engine at a swap meet. On having a quick look, it appeared to be in reasonable condition and had the few parts I needed to finish off the Gold Cheetah. Asked the owner about it, he says "It's a runner, 25 bucks and it's yours". I offered him $16 and he accepted smile

Original carb and throttle, both in good nick.

Ignition cover broken, but repairable.

Even though I know have the bits I need, I would like to resto this engine and the other Gold Cheetah down the track. So still on the hunt for spare ignition covers if anyone has a spare or two.

Regards,
AusAnzani

Hi AusAnzani and ODK members,

That's great news. It's funny how things turn out - sort of ... serendipity.

I can't help but feel that John Boundy and Wiltshire have not been recorded appropriately.
The Boundy engine suffered from a poor reputation in the early days, but by the Series 10,
I believe it was a good, reliable - and novel - engine.

Are these engines being restored on Boundy lawnmowers or outboards?

Cheers

Fantastic score...This explains a question I had in regards to a plastic cover. Jacks image is BW but shows a white cover in the image...to me this means that the cover was alloy...If it was black shading in the image, then black plastic. I did not however expect to see a white cover as most plastic covers are black plastic or alloy..

It almost looks like a moulded resin or bakerlite

Well done Aus:)

CyberJack, these engines are fitted Gold Cheetah outboards also produced by Boundy from approx. 1954 through to 1960.

I have 2 complete Gold Cheetah's (1 currently being restored) and the BMS Series 10 engine on its own at the moment. All are of varying age and yet the one plastic cover seems to fit all three equally well.

As soon resto is done (just need to repaint the cowl & tank) I'll post some pics here.

Blue, it would be nice if the covers were made of alloy, but they're not unfortunately. I have 2 now (the one pictured above and another very broken with large sections missing so not repairable) and both are made of the same plastic or bakelite material.

Will have a look on Youtube later tonight, see if I can make a mold from the one pictured above to produce a couple of spares. I'm sure they'll come in handy down the track.

It's amazing what you can learn through this site. Whilst I knew about the Lawn Patrol and the Lawn Cub, I had absolutely no idea Boundy also made a Lawn Scout. I had previously also though the name Gold Cheetah applied only to their outboards, but I guess I was misinformed there also. See here https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/u...mp;Words=Scout&Search=true#Post58600

On the outboards, the name Gold Cheetah appears on the recoil starter and the tiller depending upon year made. This is not mine, but if you want t see an example click the following link and scroll down to see the detail http://www.trailersailerplace.com.au/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=11533

It would be nice to know more about the Boundy history.

regards,

Hello AusAnzani, Blue and ODK members,

Yes, the Scout is the least known of the three, and I, too, was surprised that the
name Gold Cheetah was being used in lawnmower advertising rather than the BMS name.

Thanks for the outboard link. Very much appreciated.

The Boundy story is work in progress, but I hope to offer something shortly.
In 1959, Boundy was advertising production of 1,000 mowers a week. That's not insignificant.
The Boundy engine did not appear on the original Lawn Patrols of course - they were J.A.P.'s.

I think the Boundy engine was introduced some time in 1956.

I would love to get some good photos of your machines, particularly of the engine crankshaft
and ignition system, perhaps with your thoughts on its design...

Was the engine really 'revolutionary' or was its novel ignition, like the 'Magister' (discussed on these forums)
a leap sideways, rather than a great leap forward?

Cheers, and thanks to Blue and Yourself for this interesting topic.

Hello CyberJack, get crackin' on that Boundy article mate, I'm sure it will make a great read.

OK, please excuse the make shift stand. This Cheetah has been in restoration over the past couple of weeks and is now nearing completion. I was going to hold off posting pics 'till then, but am happy to let a few out now for you.

Before that however, you may be interested to know the other Cheetah I have has a 4 bolt crankcase, and a different cylinder and head to the one pictured here. Interestingly, BMS Series 10 pictured earlier in this thread has a 6 bolt crankcase, yet the cylinder and head appear to be same as my other Cheetah.

In the near future, I'll post comparative pics of all 3 engines and their ignition systems and hopefully you'll be able to make some sense of it all. In the meantime, can you advise if there's a way to date the engines?

Here's the work in progress resto Gold Cheetah.

Flat top cylinder and head. The cylinder and head on the BMS Series 10 and the other Cheetah are formed in the more traditional style from what I can see without pulling them down.

Ignition system. I'm yet to test the coil to see what sort of shape it's in!

Bits yet to be fitted. Had a major fail with the wrinkle paint on the cowl and tank, so I'm in the process of redoing all that right now.

Sorry pics aren't the best. Light was fading so they're a bit grainy.

Hello AusAnzani,

These are good photos, and I acknowledge your notes on crankcase bolt arrangements, etc.
I will need to move part of this topic to a more enduring area of the forum - so your
photo record is not lost in the maze of 'Wanted'.

I'll let you know. I have to go now and "get crackin' on that Boundy article" grin

No problem with the photos, and thanks for posting the advert. I hadn't seen that one before.

PS: With regards to the Gearbox and prop, I should have added 'these appear to be exclusive to the Gold Cheetah. I'm not sure if they were made by Boundy or specifically for Boundy, but I haven't seen them on any other locally produced outboards.

Also whether the engine was good or bad is of no real consequence to me. The fact is Boundy were prepared to break new ground which made them an innovator.

Most other outboard manufacturers of that time used Villiers, Victa and Hurricane engines and gearboxes/props sourced from Ell-den, Clipper and a few others, essentially producing a 'me too' product.

To their credit, Boundy did their own thing and that in my humble opinion is what makes them so special.

The Barrel and Head pictured above are different to those of any Boundy engine I've seen before. On another site, it was suggested they were not original equipment and likely Victa replacements.

This prompted a heap of additional research, and I can now confirm a few more details.

The Barrel and Head pictured above are in fact original equipment. This was confirmed through numerous measurements taken from the older and a newer style barrels which revealed the only difference to be the height of the upper cooling fins. The fins on the earlier engine sat very close to the cowl thereby restricting air flow. The newer design eliminates that restriction and improves engine cooling.

Also through a number of early advertisements I was also to confirm the engine which we know to be the BMS, was in it's earlier years referred to as the Gold Cheetah. The Gold Cheetah name was later transferred to the outboard.

Anyway, back to the Gold Cheetah outboard! Still missing a few minor parts, and with ignition cover in need of repair, but its close enough to complete to post a final series of pics here.

I'm pretty happy with the way this resto has come up.

Hope you guys have enjoyed the information, pics, and story.
