After two months I have finished doing up my Victa Self Propelled V198 VC160 Motor 1976/78 I have a Victa Powerplus Self propelled mower, purchased in 1981, model number WV 155 AO. Engine runs first start and is very smoothly, but I cannot get the clutch to drive the back wheels. I have a new clutch cone, new drive wheels and a new clutch cable - all correct parts from Bruce at Outdoor king who did a great job is sourcing the bits. If I have the mower not running the mower moves easily frontwards and back and I can move the mower around the axis of the rear axle son the independent real wheel clutches seem ok. When I engage the clutch lever I can pull the mower back but can't push it forward and the gearbox locks it to the motor. This seems back to front. Shouldn't it lock when I pull it back?? With the mower running when I push the clutch lever down as usual I get no drive!. If I lift the back wheels up I am getting forward rotation pf the drive wheels but there is no real power to push the mower. All adjustments of the clutch cable take up point or the position of the actuating arm on the gear box don't fix it. Some help would be greatly appreciated. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18669-dsc05169.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18670-20141012_105822.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18671-20141108_090511.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18672-20141108_090040.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18673-20141016_115347.jpg) Pics of the Clutch installed ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18675-20141125_161133.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18676-20141125_161150.jpg)

Hello Duke12, Moderator Bigted and ODK members,
I am amazed at the quality of restoration being presented in these great ODK forums. Duke12 that is awesome and one I shall record as a record of the model.
I, like Big T, do not have direct knowledge of this problem, but a technical expert should answer this shortly.
My personal view, from your symptom description, is that this is a differential issue. I'm sure an ODK engineer or member will assist you here.
Thanks for sharing your impressive restoration and excellent photos on ODK.
All very drivable. ----------------------------------- JACK.

You have some cable adjustment up on the handles under the air filter, loosen the 2 x nuts and the bracket slides up or down a bit. All mine are mounted on the inside, so you could flip yours around to match the one in my image. I would jack up the back wheels and watch what the belt is doing when you push the SP lever. Your locking wheels in reverse is a worry, you should be able to pull the mower back (it shouldn't lock) because when you are mowing you need to be able to get out of a corner. Are the wheel drive cogs reversible? I cant remember, I think its the Honda SP that has a Left and Right cog that cant be swapped.
Happy is he who penetrates the mystery of things.

Hi, there are one way clutches on each gear where the drive wheels fit, just make sure they are on the correct sides. BTW, great job on the resto

Mark, I fixed the clutch cable holder as described, duhh that was a bad miss for me. Thanks guys I was almost onto it last night looking at the diagram I used to work on the drive shaft shows two different parts for the Clutch Spring RH - CH84202A and Clutch Spring LH - CH84203A Only one number different! Another mad thought - if I could have made the motor run backwards the mower would have mowed fine in reverse ha ha. All finished now as far as I can tell. It is operating like brand new and has a lovely feel to the drive. Probably a silly question but I don't know if I should grease the drive wheel clutch assemblies or not, at present they are clean n dry. When I took them out they were very surface rusted from me washing the old girl. Grease or not ?? Duke Some finished piccys ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18702-20141126_133531.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18703-gearshaft.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18704-20141126_134332.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/11/full-6817-18705-20141126_134344.jpg)

Nice result but I reckon there is something wrong here, that workshop is far far too clean. I bet you can even walk around in it. :-)

Ha! aussietrev
Well spotted! It is spotless and full of woodworking machines, my first love. The house is only two years old and I am working hard on making the shed a mess. There is a box trailer sitting in the middle most of the time when I don't have a motorcycle in parts on the floor.
Some smart mate of mine said "Bloody nice shed Duke, Don't cha think its a bit much for a trailer shed?"
Anyway a beer and something to pull to bits and I'm as happy as..
Merry Christmas Duke

SHOCK IN SMALL VILLAGE Resident turns grass into lawn with a 33 year old Victa Mower!!!! Yeah well it went ok until there was a god awful noise each time I approached the long grass. Like a grrrrrowling noise. Shut her down and put it on one side and found the blade holder disc nut had become loose or I had not tightened it enough. The disc was spinning freely on the drive shaft. A large ring spanner and a block of wood later all was well with that. Next the cutting height had altered drastically - diving into the grass. Easy this one, the height spring from front to back rod had come off. The you beaut chrome cap that was holding the spring on the chassis post had jumped off. Well it must have I didn't do it. So it got bashed on this time with a hammer instead of just pushing it on firmly. After that it mowed all of the lawn like a new on. Smooooooth! And in case you are wondering - yes I am that anal - I washed it when I was finished. Merry Christmas Duke

Hi Duke12 and ODK members, I love this topic because it has a great story of adversity and resolution. Just listen to you - the tribulations in your last post. I was on the edge of my seat I love your journalistic style - "Shock in small village". Brilliant! The last line was literary gold... You have overcome. You have conquered. You have turned grass into lawn. [p.s. great photos for the record of this machine.] Thanks for sharing your story on ODK.-------------------------------------------- JACK.

Hi Speedy,
Duke was seen last on the 3rd of March last year, so at a guess the answer is probably not, remembering he has only ever posted 16 times all up. My theory is that he's not a paid up member and thus why he hasn't posted in ages.
Cheers, BB.
