sorry if this has been covered before, i had a search but didn't find anything on this model.

I picked this up from kerbside collection a couple of months back. a 2 stroke Victa statesman in really good condition, i think it's only a couple of years old.

it wasn't getting spark, so i've put a new coil/lead and plug in it, and spaced this with a business card, but i'm still getting nothing (either at plug or just the lead)
i've disconnected the cutout pins as well, but still nothing.

i think it's a newer model without a module, so i'm wondering if there's anything else i should check, or if there's a specific coil i should be using?

G'day mogwai as far as I know it should have an ignition module here is a pic.. [Linked Image]

yeah i've got another older powertorque model that's just given up the goat, that one has a module under the carb, but this hasn't got it, or even any wiring/mounts for it.
i thought i read that newer powertorques dont' have it.

Hi Mogwai and welcome to the forum.
You are correct, that is the later model and doesn't run the module. The "module" is integrated in the coil. So my first question is, What coil did you replace it with. Does the coil have the same part number on it as the one you pulled out? A fair assumption is that the coil you replaced it with is ok. 2 things come to mind that could be causing your problem:
1) The cutout wires are shorting out and making contact in the protective sheath and hence no spark. Disconnect them from the coil end and see if you get spark.
2) The flywheel is up the creek and hence no spark. i've only ever come across one that i've had to replace a flywheel so it's rare but can happen.
Do these checks and let us know how you go.

TBH i didn't check the part# coil was the same as the outgoing unit, so it's probably that.
the old coil had a prong coming out of the resin area, which was tack welded onto the magnet, but the new one doesn't have this, i didn't think too much of this at the time, but it points to it being a different part.

can i just buy a separate module and use it with the coil i have, or do i need the coil with built in module?

only reason i ask is that i can't see any coils at bunnings, and no coils with module on ebay, the only one i've found for post 1996 online is $128 new.

Please note its quite rare for an ignition coil to fail, infact in 8 years I have probably had less than 10 failed coils come through my workshop.

This might sound like an obvious question but are you making surte the thread of the sparkplug is touching part of the engine when testing for spark?

thanks mate, i've grabbed that one. i was checking the coil with the screw that goes into the end of the high tension lead up against the engine head fins.
do the modules fail at a higher rate than the coils, or is it the same?
i took the interrupt wires fully out of the carby to make sure that wasn't the issue (but made sure they didn't contact each other or the body)

To support what has been said so far, here is an image of the 2 different types of magnetos, I have just refurbished and tested a bunch.

Yes, the silver ignition modules do fail,.
I set up a test engine, gap and bolt the magneto down, earth out the module and the lug with a clamp lead, make sure the kill wires clear and then flick the flywheel magnets past the magnetos armature whilst earthing out the spark plug and look for a nice arc across the plugs gap.

When servicing I do this prior to mounting the engine.
I agree with above, it is rare for magneto coils to fail, the ignition modules fail more often.
Check all you can before condemning the magneto because in a lot of cases it is fine.

It is on its way, I managed to bugger up the postage a bit so I packed a few extra goodies, the magneto has been fitted with a brand new plug boot, there is a new set of rubbers for the kill switch and a brand new spark plug.

Thanks MrMckay, and everyone who helped. put in the new coil/module and it fired over right away. the Carb was still leaking from the seal on the removable face, but it was actually caused by bad threading of the jet.
swapped the carb body out and it's all good.

amazing the things people chuck away.
