Can you advise if a missing oil ring on a VC Sports would result in excess oil? My current repair is missing it. Thanks to the ODK Masters. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/10/full-6859-18203-2014_10_30_12.55.05.jpg)

Vc is 2s yes? This engine does not run an oil ring as such. 2 compression rings with the lower using a ring expander to apply more force to the cylinder wall increasing compression and risk of blow by. It is however lubricated by the oil fuel mix from the crankcase gases. Im unclear what you mean by excess oil? Its a 2 stroke what oil goes in gets burnt in the cycle. If you mean oil in the crankcase then that is whats left overtime when the fuel and oil seperate or when fuel vapours left in the crankcase when the mower is shut down evaporate.....The reason people dont use the expander is that some rings brands run identical ring sizes so do not require nor can you fit the expander. The other brands have one ring slightly smaller for use with the expander. You will sometimes see a small/fine stripe on one ring which denotes the thicker one. the other reason is....The fitter was lazy or didnt know what he was doing....Hope that makes sense...Im just curious about excess oil. wxcessive oil CONSUMPTION in a 4 stroke will definately use more oil and probably sieze the engine if they wernt fitted. But a 2s doesnt work this way:)

Thanks for the quick reply on my question. Yes it is the "expander" that I mean. Do you think that a ridiculous amount of cranking (start then stall) may have put so much fuel through it that it had the oil leaking from somewhere? Maybe combined with the missing expander? I did though, have success in starting/running her properly finally, by changing the CONDENSER (I use caps because it was what the forum always suggests). Thanks again. I need all the help I can muster because I am getting older and nearly worn out myself.

Yeah a lot of cranking will produce excess oil, as Blue says 'the fuel evaporates off'. The piston acts like a pump and pushes the oil out of the exhaust and carb inlet.
We have to remember the "three"; fuel, compression and spark if one or more of these 3 is not right no amount of cranking will help and as you say, just wear you out, not to mention the excess wear & tear on the starting mechanism.
