If you look through the old threads, I think you'll find that you can shorten the trial and error process if you shim the clutches so that there is just a slight drag when they are disengaged. I suggest you begin with this thread:

so i tear it down again and take out some shim and reassemble on bench and get it to the point it starts to drag a little in the neutral position and that should be right then ?

Yes wiix, just be sure you tighten the clamp nuts at the sides of the clutches properly so there is pressure on the shim stack when you check for drag. Of course you check for drag by holding the two ends of the axle, resting the outside of the clutches on the bench, and pulling the axle back and forth across the bench. Make the shim stacks the same on both sides, so it operates symmetrically. There is no need to put the axle back into the machine until you have the shim stacks right.

I hope you've checked that there is plenty of lining left on both clutches: if they need to be re-lined, now is the time to do it. Once you have the clutches set up properly, if there is slippage, it will be happening somewhere else. In particular, if you have slip going forward, but not when reversing, chances are it is belt slip. That mostly happens because the automatic tensioner is not taking up the slack properly. You can find an explanation of that, and how to fix it, in this recent thread:

the clutches were relined about 2 years ago be cause we were trying to diagnose the slipping we got it back together it worked fine until one of the bearings caused the clutch to lock up and the owner took it apart done the bearing but then had trouble getting it together so im giving him a hand to get it right.

Hi wiix,,
For the members here that have not got experience with ride-ons, can you please post some pics of the axle during the drag tests...I, for one, can't picture in my mind what you are actually doing. wink
Many thanks mate,
cheers

This roughly shows what i am doing to get the shim correct i first pull it apart then i remove the shims and i reassemble with out the sprocket and run it on a set of jack stands to check the drag i have it now so it has little drag on both clutches so when i get it back together i will post up how it went

Aldot did it by assembling the clutches on the axle (including tightening the nuts properly) then holding the two ends of the axle in his hands so it couldn't rotate. He rolled the pulleys (on the outside of the clutch disks) back and forth across the bench. By feeling how hard the axle was trying to rotate, he could monitor the drag. No drag, take out a shim. Too much drag, add a shim. Not too difficult, I think, once you have the axle out of the tractor.

Wiix,

Excellent photo's mate.

Am thinking of tightening the clamp nut on the forward clutch just a bit on my E2000 as I need to put a fair bit of pressure on the forward pedal but the reverse is fine, both corks were changed in Feb 2012) and the drive belt is as tight as.

I was thinking of doing it on the machine, but I don't have the right size open end spanner, do you remember what size socket you are using on that second photo so I can buy the correct size spanner.

Any thing I should keep in mind when doing this?
