Bruce, I'm trying to strip down my Victa 18 mower for restoration. I'm still waiting for the used manual to arrive, but would love to be able to remove the disc that the blades attach to. I've tried using a spanner on the nut below the starter pulley to stop the motor rotating while I work on loosening the 1" nut holding the blade disc on, but nothing is happening. Am I doing the right thing? Is it only rust/corrosion stopping the nut from loosening? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Terry.

Terrymac,

When you try to loosen the nut on the blade plate side just use a ring spanner and hit it with a hammer. The nut is usually one that has a nylon insert in it and once you have released the pressure it you should be able to undo it. cheers2

Thanks, Bruce. Once I knew that I'd been doing the right thing, I gave the ring spanner several mighty swings with a two pound hammer, and on the fourth full wack the nut finally moved. Now...
onward to more adventures with the mysteries of the Victa 18...(shades of Star Trek... "To boldly go.....").
Terry.
