Hi again Paul,We have a number of Victa aficionados here that will give you the correct advice, but I notice in the pic that the metal boss is still attached to the crankshaft. That will need to be removed before the lower crankcase can be removed. There is a thread on boss removal, click HEREYour engine is a full crank engine, but the procedure in the same.

Take the barrel off first...put a slave nut if youve got one (1/2" 16 BSF) and screw it on the top crankshaft not letting it come thru the nut. grasp the upper crank case assy and place the unit a few cms above a wood or soft surface. gently hit the upper shaft and it will normally drop through. increase pressure if you need to. the lower assy still has the boss on as deejay has stated. since the halves are apart you wont get a decent hit to the boss without damaging the crankcase. support the lower shaft upside diwn on blocks supporting both sides evenly making sure you have wood or something soft in the mating surfaces. put the nut on t he shaft and same as the top hit the nut and force the boss onto the seal and push them through together. if you have access to a press the same process applies. but always make sure the nuts is 3/4 on the shaft so it doesnt get damaged. you can also heat the lower crank case assy and heat the seal so it falls through easier. Your mower is a model 5 series 1...The engine serial denotes either a model correctly fitted model 5 S1 or a model 4 engine fitted to your model 5S1 base. the reason for the uncertainty is this serial is very low for your mower and if priven accurate could possibly be one of the very first model 5S1's produced by victa. This is one of the last serial transitions we are currently reasearching but at this point it appears to be accurate for your mower and a very slight possibilty it was produced in 57 but more likely early 58. Anyways a nice early Victa youll have fun restoring...any questions you need ask, we have all the answers...welcome and enjoy!
Mal...

Paul.foot, you have a Victa 18 Model 5 series 1, it looks to have the right engine as the number sugests and is quite early in the series, I would guess 1958, and as Deejay has pointed out the boss will need to be removed to seperate the cases, so remove the barrel and rest the boss on a substantial block of steel like a good heavy vise (I use a bit of railway iron for an anvil) or similar, then give it a good wack with a decent hammer and it will pop off the tapered shaft, (similar to cracking ball joints) so to try and make myself a bit clearer, is what you are doing is hitting the side of the boss, not trying to knock the boss off the end of the shaft, I hope you can work out my babblings, good luck with the mower.

Hi Deejay, Bluegmhtmonaro & Jonesy, thanks heaps for your advice. After 7 taps with my hammer it popped straight off, now on to the fun part of cleaning it and hopefully bringing it back to life. Thanks also for letting me know what year and model it is, will help when I need to track down some parts, eg wheels, fuel cap etc. Thanks heaps again Paul.

Hi Paul, And good stuff mate, you got it off correctly and now the hunt is on for some parts....some of the members here may be able to help you out there, but it pays to browse eBay...just Google 'Victa 18' and the sub topics, you may find the parts you are looking for...but be aware, some parts are now like hens teeth and the prices reflect that! Good luck and good hunting!

hey mate , it does look a bit rough you could have it re bored and a new over size piston and it would be good as new , however you may get away with a hone and clean the piston up with very fine wet and dry sand paper , and a new set of rings

Thanks Tomo. Another question for you, or the other experts out there, I don't want to spend too much dosh on this machine, so am wondering, what would be better:- - Buy a new set of rings ($10), and re-use the piston after I clean it up, and go buy a engine hone($22), and hone the barrel, for a total of $32, or - Buy a piston and ring kit ($28) and just try and use some very fine wet and dry on the barrel?
On top of the above I would need to get a new head gasket, air filter and a service kit for the carby, so just trying to limit how much I spend on this old girl, if I decide to get her going......

If the decision is purely based on finacials i would go with option 1. you will need to hone either way, wet/dry on the bore will do very little with a new piston.
