Hi guys. I just recently finshed giving my Victa Power Torque engine a basic rebuild. Changed head gaskit. carbi rebuild kit. new plug and put a plug where the de comp valve should go. All went well until about 30 mins of use. Then the idle started going up then right down to almost stalling then up again then down ect. Any sugestions as to what might be the cause? thanks guys!!!

Hi Dave,
I notice with most 'power-torque' engines the 'O' rings also fail, particularly the one under the starter, and of course the carby 'O' rings. This failure will cause these symptoms.
Did you replace the carby 'O' rings when you put the carby back on?
cheers

Hi Dave,
Good to see you are trying to look after your mower.
To help you out.
First get a decompressor in serviceable condition and install it in the mower as it should be. Without the decompressor you will ruin the starter mechanism fairly quickly as it puts un-necessary strain on the pull cord. Try to keep them as original as possible and you wont go wrong.
Now with regard to your reving up and down it sounds as if the lifter within the carby (it goes on after the cam,It has three prongs coming out of it) has not been placed into the three slots in the carby correctly. If you dont slide this piece in correctly it will give the symptoms you identified. You will see the three slots in-side the carby that this piece needs to slide into.
If you need a picture I am happy to put one up for you.
Put some pictures up for us, it makes it easy for others to help out.
Blokes like Bigted and Joe Carroll who are much more experienced will no doubt have some other comments.

Give me a pre EFI V8 and I'll make it purr with a screwdriver. Little 2 stroke engines well not so confident. I think I made an apprentice mistake. I didn't put the head gasket on dry, I used the gaskit and some sealent putty together. Well I just noticed that the gaskit has leaked a tiny amount of oil via the area of the head closest to the ground. Does a leaking head gasket cause erratic revving?

I say remove the head and replace the gasket
But normally when an engine HUNTS or SURGES it is a fuel issue
clean out the brass screw with compressed air / make sure float high is set ok and should run fine

Dave, I dont personally use any sealant. Just a little grease to hold it in position until and secure the engine head. I have never had a problem with this method. Be careful no to overtighten them as you will blow the gasket easily. When the gaskets blow in my experience the engines dont normally start because of the lack of compression.

I am still leaning towards a carby issue. I trust you cleaned the carby with compressed air properly? Some pictures of your mower and carby will help us get a resolution. Did you replace the float needle, whenever I overall a victa 2 stroke I always replace the needle because they can cause havoc with correct fuel flow. The tip of the needle might seem ok but I have found many mowers that only needed new needles.

Victorius, can you start a new thread on your problem to avoid confusion with Dave's thread. I am happy to help and Im sure others will too.

Peter
