you test both the heavy and light windings with an 1000 ohm ohm meter .
the light winding if broken will show no continuity. usually the heavy winding is ok.basically you can only just check it for good continuity unless you own a special coil checking meter. its easier to test for spark when its attached to the stator plate.so if it has continuity in both windings then it might be ok. or if you have a good coil of the same type you can match the ohm values of the good coil compared the the test subject coil
