Hi all
I have a villiers engine as per above on a ransomes simes cylinder mover which was running rich. After taking the carby apart the float had some fuel inside it. On inspection there are no cracks or obvious holes.
I cleaned the carb and it runs fine again, so it was probably just needed cleaning but the float may need replacing down the track.
Question is has anyone had any success soldering a float up?
Does anyone know where I could buy a replacement float ?
Cheers
Mick

If the float is brass, it is normal practice to remove the fuel from inside it, then solder it up. Have you found the leak?
The process is to warm up the float so the fuel will evaporate. Do not use a direct flame, or the plume of petrol vapour coming out of the float will ignite. You also need to control the pressure inside the float, which implies using only a small heat source. Of course an alternative is to drill a small hole in the float to facilitate rapid draining, then solder up the hole after it has been held at say 100 degrees C for half an hour, but this will leave the float looking repaired.

Grumpy
I can't find the leak must be very small.
I was thinking of drilling a small hole as you mentioned, then filling the whole up.
Any idea where I could buy a replacement part if I mess it up?
Cheers

If you can't find the leak, heat up some water in a pot, drop in the float, push it underwater with a piece of wood, and see where the bubbles come from. (The air in the float will expand due to the heat, and you will get a stream of bubbles. Mark where they come from immediately.)
I think you'd have to get a replacement float from someone who keeps Villiers bits. There are some Outdoorking members who do so.
