Hello to everyone, i'm just new to outdoor king and am looking forward to plenty of good info.
I have just purchased a Victa 11-497 (11HP B&S) ride on which is going to be restored. I was just wandering if anyone can help me out with the approx. year date of this mower. Also i can't see any model identifiers on the engine except for a sticker on the top cover that says "Briggs and Stratton 11 HP 399cc Synchro-Balanced". The engine is coloured black. Any ideas what the model number might be?

Thanks very much
Victor

Hi Victor, welcome to Outdoorking.

The 11-497 is one of the Victa-badged MTD mowers. Unfortunately I don't know what the equivalent MTD model number was - if you need that I suggest you send a Private Message to Bruce, the site owner and administrator. Bruce is a dealer and has access to such information. The proper model number may be useful for obtaining documents and spare parts from US sources.

If you post the Model, Type and Code information stamped on your Briggs engine, from that we can tell you the engine's date of manufacture, which is probably just a couple of months before the mower was made.

The numbers were stamped onto the cooling air cowl near the intake port for most models, but there are other locations that were sometimes used. I suggest you look at the Briggs video showing you where to find them. It is here:

Hi Vilarolmages, and a warm welcome to the forum. It's great to have you aboard. grin

You might find you model numbers for your Victa Ride-On under the seat. For your engine, have a look for the engine Model, Type and Code stamped into the air-cowling of the Briggs, and please post them here as we can then give you the date of manufacture of the engine, which will then give us a rough idea of the age of your machine.
For more information on you model numbers..Please Click HERE

Once again VilaroImages, :welcome: to OutdoorKing.

Thanks for the welcomes and the quick responses. I'll have a better look at the engine for the number and maybe post some pics of the mower.

Ok, so i found the number after a little dismantling. Model: 252707, Type: 0175-01, Code: 81050511. If i'm right the year of this engine is 1981 (B&S numbering fact sheet).

Cheers

Yes, it was made on 5 May, 1981, so you have one of the last Briggs engines to have breaker points (they went electronic in 1982). I can't tell you which of the US plants built it, since it has long since closed, and consequently isn't on my list.

In case it helps with the restoration, here is the Illustrated Parts List for your engine:
http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/Z6lttJVJ1DajI.pdf

Here is the Operator's Manual:
http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/msoBGL-K_ny7tH217FzoPu.pdf

You already know that the engine has a displacement of 25 cubic inches. It is of the third design generation, with a vertical crankshaft and a Flo-Jet carburetor, plain main bearings, and a 12 Volt gear drive electric starter. Being a 1981 engine it is covered in the Briggs and Stratton Service and Repair Instructions 1984, which (along with all of the other Briggs general repair manuals) is available for download from the manuals section.

Thanks so much for the great info Grumpy. I haven't had any luck finding a manual on the B&S site. if you could post a link that would be great.

Thanks
Victor

Victor, you will need to subscribe to the manuals section to be able to get access. Here is where you go to get the manual, once you have access:
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=20019#Post20019

Then select Briggs & Stratton Service and Repair Instructions 1984.pdf

Sorry to be a pain but is it the lawnmower manuals or engine manuals subscription?

Thanks for all the help.
