I'd like to see that at another angel as that really doesn't look the same as what I was talking about,and very large there not very big. That looks large more like a line or fault in the casting,but I could be wrong. Just can't work it out from that angel.

Well your not alone there Jeffrey, Unfortunately I cannot see what Ty is seeing and I have used a magnifying glass on my computer screen....we need another pic and the area cleaned up if we are going to resolve this.

I'll take a picture of the one on my J.A.P engine on my Scott Bonnar 22 and see what I'm talking about. Over the weekend of course as I know that tonight I won't be able to,due to me not being well as at night time I just fade into a dopey sleep. Not good.

Hmm, that I would love to see, also, can you compare the year the year stamps, to the serial, to see if the year has any habit in the serial too.

Maybe if we could work out how the serials work on these machines we could find a way to date it that way? It looks like the letter partly visible in the serial number pic, after the engine model, is a date code. See http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/EngineDating/JAPDate.htmBut the codes were 're-used', so the model number would determine which 'date block' is applicable. For the JAP, the serial number will be on the top of the crankcase, next to the joint with the cylinder block, on the carburettor side, if it isn't OHV. As far as I know, they were made in 3 blocks, with part of the serial number as the date code.
the serial number is made up of; model no./year code/serial no./customer number

It seems to me either a P or F, now this engine definitely seems newer than 1940, so F??
Considering the block it would most likely fit into, F would be 1957

This is what voljon replied to my post about my JAP 4/3. jonesy, jap engine 4/3 B/P/89665/6. the numbers indicate, 4/3 model, B I think is the cc capacity, P year manufacture,1940, 89659 is the engine number and the number 6 indicates the engine is fitted with a non standard part.regards,john

Sorry, I missed the part where you identified the letter as P, I was working of the image alone, which could be P or F.
If it is indeed a P, then from my understanding of the info you have found, 1940 would be correct.
