Hi, I've just recently acquired two off Scott bonnar Model 430 Diplomats, as I have heard spare parts are hard to come by.
Anyway, I consider myself pretty good when it comes to stripping things, but this machine is, well got me!
When I engage the transmission lever the drum doesn't turn, everything under the cover is in place and working as I believe it should, however the drum is not turning and makes a noise as if something is sheared off. The problem I'm having is dismantling this baby. Would somebody please help. The clutch pulley assembly has a plate on the outside with two holes in it which I would assume has a left hand thread inside(just Guessing)
PLEASE ADVISE

Hi Sprocket, welcome to Outdoorking. You probably know that the Scott Bonnar Models 430 and 590 are very similar (the belt clutch arrangements are probably the biggest difference). They both have a fairly serious weakness, in that the plastic gear which drives the rear roller is prone to coming loose on its steel hub, at which point there is no longer any drum drive. Could be the same problem I had in the thread Grumpy linked to.
Probably the plastic ring gear is cracked and spinning on the boss under load.
Try it again but tilt the machine on its front roller to lift the rear roller off the ground, do the rollers turn now with no load?

Hi Grumpy,
Thanks that thread answered all my questions, Somehow I knew it was something simple, I just didn't want to put to much pressure on the very flimsy looking aluminium pulley. Hopefully I can now get one of my two machines running and cut the grass. That is, if the rain will let up.

Hi Sprocket, if, as I suspect, the nylon ring gear has cracked or the pinion is broken....just send me a PM and I will give you the information as to where you can source a metal replacement gear.

Hi Deejay,
I have been following these threads and have acquired an old diplomat. I have stripped it all down to replace all the bearings etc. I got down to the dreaded nylon ring gear and it has the beginning of small cracks and was wondering if you could tell me where I could get the metal replacement. A big thanks to all the other posts in regards to disassemble they were a great help.

Hi Deejay,I am new to this forum stuff but I was repairing my Scott Bonnar Model 430 and found some great info in the various
posts to be able to locate the faulty nylon drive gear and also need to know where I can locate a metal unit if available.I have had the reel mower for 25 years and this is the only major problem I had with it.

Same issue here in Townsville, with a gorgeous old Diplomat.
Any chance the drive cogs are still available?

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but to my knowledge the replacement metal (after-market) gear is no longer available as the firm who made them has closed down....  Maybe someone in the future will tool up and re-manufacture... Only time will tell... Once again Fifi, to Outdoorking!
