Hi !
Just joined after purchasing SB33 from the bloke across the road & not knowing a thing about them.

So like a kid at Christmas, I couldn't wait to get it home and start to tinker.
Check all over for anything that may look to be a bit suspect.
Didn't find any that rang alarm bells (easy to say when I know nothing about them) so put some fuel in and pulled the cord.........
Sweet as! The 3.5 BS kicked and didn't miss a beat.

So it runs well, but the clutch will not disengage (I worked this after reading some of the posts from the members of this forum. Thanks) it look like the bush that puts pressure on the housing is very worn.

Before I get suck into full restoration, how freely available are parts for a SB33?

Hi Humdinger, and a warm welcome to the forum. Its great to have another Scott Bonnar owner on board.
The SB Model 33 was a 16" cut machine, first introduced in 1960 and manufactured at the Thebarton factory. It ceased production in 1966.
It was manufactured in 2 versions....the first was with a Villiers 98cc. Mark 3 'Midget' 2-stroke engine and all chain drive. The second was with a Kirby-Tecumseh HK 25 2.5HP 4-stroke engine and was a hybrid drive of 'V' belt and chains.
I have not heard of a Model 33 being factory fitted with a 3.5HP Briggs and Stratton; as that engine was fitted to a much later Scott Bonnar Model 45.
I would very much like to see some pics of your machine, with the chain case (side) cover removed and of the ID plate affixed to the mower.
Some parts of your machine will be rare and hard to source.

I've tried a few times now, but to no avail.


I started the pull down & clean up and I have found that clutch has not any cork installed in it.
I say the guy that did the upgrade of BS 3.5 forgot the cork!

Try resizing your pics using a free download program, just google resizing photos, and keep them to preferably under 2Mb each.
Also you may try to refresh your cookies found at the bottom of the dropdown list in 'My Stuff' on the toolbar above or Click HERE
This will log you out, so you will have to log in again.

I need to see the pics so as I can advise you on what needs to be done.
Please let us know how you get on.

Good stuff Humdinger, well it is as i thought, it is the later version with chains and V belt drive and appears in quite good condition for its age!
Plenty of meat on the reel...I would need a close up pics of the sprockets to access their condition...but from a distance they seem OK...
Can you post the complete string of numbers stamped into the top of the air cowling of the Briggs, I can then give you the date of manufacture of the engine.

I would also like pics of the clutch parts you are working on.
