Giday , tecumseh prisma 40 / pri 156. E-37254L. This is all I could find ond the mower case so I don't know if it is the model number or not . [Linked Image]

I spent a day in cleaning it up and give a little run with 600 ml oil in the sump but it shows on the dip stick that it can take more not much though . What id like to know is how much oil it should take , what hp and where can I get a air filter (foam I guess) from .first time on a tecumseh 4 stroke which seems a good little motor and runs quite smooth. And year of manufacture would be great.

I believe they're the rebirthed tecuseh's posssibly italian made, i think. So being a 40 its a 4hp but is pretty much a TVS90 with different carby jetting to get it up to the alleged 4hp. Year of manufacture is around 2000 and like most tecumseh takes 630ml of oil.
Yes, they are a smooth running engine when the carby's are right and masport used them a fair bit on a model they called the "Stinger". So if Bruce cant help you out with a filter try an authorised masport dealer, failing that cut one out of a large sponge oil it up and away you go.

A long story short, tecumeh went belly up some years ago and were not very popular in Aus. Victa used a number or their engines on their mowers in the 90's before they were bought by Briggs. The later models, like the one you have were on a few masposrt models for a while there but they too reverted back to Briggs. i'm gussing pricing and availability of parts may have been contributing factors. Always glad to help out where i can.

I believe Victa liked these engines as they were allowed to brand the motor as one of their engines. Where as Briggs didn't allow that. So there had to be somewhere the Briggs logo. Where on the Tecumseh there was nothing on there to say who made the engine.
