Gidday, a mate has given this mower and im having trouble with spark. [Linked Image]
I have been getting spark but mostly weak . I not sure how the timing works on these older models. [Linked Image]
There are two adjusting screws and when loosened the whole plate moves left or right . Is there a way of setting this correctly as when I move them everything moves. Model number is 269219345.

gday roebuck.
1st .remove plug and put a screwdriver down hole. rotate engine clockwise till it reaches top dead centre. which is pushing the screwdriver its furthest position out of the plug hole.
2nd .rotate engine backwards till the screwdriver drops down 3mm. this will put the piston at 3mm below top dead centre. which is the correct setting for setting timing.
3rd . note that for timing to be correct the points should be just starting to open at the 3mm below top dead centre mark.
4th . the points gap max has to be .685mm maximum setting.highest point on the cam.
5th. get all these things correct and you will have perfect timing.

note: if you have done all these things and still weak spark.
try pulling off plate and buffing all parts shiny clean.
polish points to clean off any corrosion.
clean all terminals.
wipe all traces of dust and grease from everything.
this should work. it has worked many many times for me.
if still weak spark then your coil is bad. (not really likely though).
then once you done all these things and still no luck i will tell you how to test your coil. good luck bazz

ps: another issue with spark could be the terminal on the end of your plug lead. a lot of old mowers tips get full of crud and lose there ability to conduct through the grime on them

Hi Gizmo, have done everthing as above . Spark is still low but every now and then it gives off a really strong spark but only very briefly. Can you tell me how to test the coil first before I go out and purchase a new one . Just incase its not that. Cheers rob.

Gday' it seems to have more even spark now . I had a good look at the terminals of the coil and found that they needed cleaning. I managad to get it started and running for about a minute ,as it was running it cut in and out several times and then stopped altogether and then I tried starting it but it would onlly give off a single fire here and there. Not sure if is spark or carby issue . When iturn the motor over it releases fuel out of the exhaust. Not familiar with g3 carbys much. Does anyone no the name of a good psychologist.

sorry for the limited post was on lunch on my phone .
it would be worth pulling the carb off and giving it a clean and make sure the needle is seating it may also have the older float which can some times need a tweak. have ou tred running it with the kill switch wire disconnected from the carb ?

It has plastic float and yes I have tried running without kill switch. Will try cleaning carb again but I think it still might be inadequit spark. How can I test the coil ? I have a mnltimeter that will test ohms.thanks again.

Have you replaced the condenser? The coil is a rare suspect, afterall its quite well protected and is a basic bit of gear (not saying impossible as the insulation in them does break down), the condenser is quite a bit more likely to fail, especially as it warms up.

Yeh brand new points and condensor . Carby clean twice needle and seat may need replacing but look ok. New set of rings plenty compression ,new bottom seal, top seal good . I still only get a single fire from the machine every now and then. Using drill to try and start it same everytime.spark plug one is ngk b4es the other champion n21. I'm lost on this one.

gday roebuck been away for a while but heres a link to a similar way to test your coil.the process is exactly the same even though its not a victa he is testing. its a lot easier to watch this than trying to explain it in words.
cheers bazz

a drill may not turn with enough momentum specially if its got good compression.

you could aslo try swapping out the whole ignition plate with one from another mower just to see if it will run with that one. if it runs ok you at least you know where your problem lies.

single fire every now and then.
check that the keyway is pushed all the way down on the cam before putting magneto flywheel back on. the timing sounds like it might still be off.
oh and just to note: i do have 2 of those particular coils at home that are no good. they do bugger up sometimes ,but not often.
(could be just your luck eh)

have you unscrewed the high tension lead out of the coil?
might be a good idea to take it out and cut off 3mm off it then screw it back in.
sorry i am just adding things as they come to me.

whilst youve got it taken out. test it for continuity.

you might want to check this post out also as they had a similar prob to yours

Thanks gizmo , have already done the leed. Great video , I will try this tomorrow on the coil and I'll put in a new keyway just to make sure and that the key is in neat. I did notice after I put the flywheel on there was a tiniest bit of movement clockwise and anti but I asumed once I tightened the cup and nut up it wouldn't have any movement but now you have me wondering if something so small could actualy be the trouble. I wonder if the bottom part of the keyway sits /the cam that goes over the shaft has movement if so could this cause a problem ? Your know how is great and thanks again, rob.
