Hi guys,
Does anyone know where repro wheels to suit a model 5 Special can be bought? I have found a set on Ebay, but at $220, they are out of my price range. It also appears Outdoor King are out of stock. Any help would be much appreciated

Hey there unkiemonk
you wont find any cheaper, the ones I got from Outdoor king + freight worked out a bit dearer than that. there is someone else who has had wheels and hubcaps for $250 buy it now or make an offer and I noticed he has accepted $245 for the last couple, but i'm afraid that's about it, I have done quite a bit of searching & have not found anything else.

Cheers.

Hi unkiemonk, I think you will find that price pretty spot on, these wheels are only going to go up in price, because they are no longer being manufactured at present, as far as I know. wink
As you know, OutdoorKing is out of stock; from my research this morning, they are not available anywhere other than eBay at present.
Here is the link if you are interested....Click HERE

Thanks fellas. Looks like I'll have to save my pocket money for a little longer! I'm probably better off finding a decent set of used wheels anyway, as I still use my Special as my regular mower.

On a side note, I don't suppose anyone could hazard a guess as to when a Model 5 with a serial number of 289283 would have been made, and what type of snorkel (short or long) it should have?

from the info I have gathered from here if it does not have any letters in the number, and by that number I would hazard a guess as a model 5,series 2, but without seeing it it's a bit hard and I am only learning all this as well, others on here will be able to give you a bit better idea, I would also say it should have the long snorkle with either the small white or small black air cleaner. other things to help would be does it have the groove for the edger, does it have the extentions on the front of the front axel housings? a picture would help these guys as some motors found themselves on different mowers.

cheers.

Yep, that' what I'd guessed, I thought the engine number may be a little high. I added a few pics to help ID the old girl. I was guessing 1959/60 version 2 maybe with a later engine?

yeah it's a model 5 series 2, just need the right fuel tap and badge, can't see you air cleaner, those wheels look like they would scrub up OK and with some repo hub caps would look a million bucks, also a groove cover and spring, recoil starter I think is optional not sure if they all come out with them? it also has a later model snorkle clamp on it too. looks very good a it sits though, well done.

Cheers.

"just need the right fuel tap and badge" The hunt is on for a cheap badge, but not sure about changing the tap. I use the mower regularly, so I was unsure how reliable the old brass/cork taps would be. Any thoughts?

"Those wheels look like they would scrub up OK" Two of the wheels have cracked inside the sleeve where the bushes slip in, so will need to replace them when I can.

"also a groove cover and spring" Got that one on the way!

"recoil starter I think is optional not sure if they all come out with them"From what I've read, the recoil starter was optional, but I'm not %100 on that. Kind of like the look, but considering changing it.

"it also has a later model snorkle clamp on it too"Yeah, wish I could find an original/repro. Do you know where I might find one?

Thanks for all your help also!

Hi unkiemonk.
You mention that this is your "regular mower".
Does it need to be original?
If not, you might find it favourable to put a good set of wheels on it ,the later wheels seem to be stronger.
My special that I use frequently has a set of Sheerline/Utility wheels on it and it is a pleasure to push.
These wheels are readily available on fleabay, BUT it involves fitting new axles as these wheels have a 9/16 inch dia axle, as opposed to the 1/2 inch axles on original wheels.
Just a suggestion.
Cheers

Thanks for your input, alwil. I did give some thought to putting some more recent wheels on, but decided against it, as I wanted to try and keep it looking as original as possible, at least from a distance. Hopefully i'll come across a couple of structurally sound originals that won't break the bank. For me, the wheels are 90% of the mowers appeal, just a shame they are so damn expensive!
