Hi,

My Stihl 038M is working fine when horizontal but if I start to turn vertical while boring into a log it starts to stall and wont recover until it is horizontal again and the trigger feathered to keep it running.

My initial thought is fuel starvation, so a new filter was installed and retested with a full tank of fresh fuel but the problem remains. I replaced the carby and ignition pickup with a new one's last year and have done about 20 hrs use since before this problem started.

What have I missed?

regards

It is likely to be fuel starvation, as you said, and it is probably a tank or fuel line issue. Does it improve if you have a completely full tank of fuel? I had a similar problem once and it turned out to be a split in the fuel pickup line inside the tank. When the fuel level was higher than the split it ran, but when the split emerged from the fuel, it sucked air and died.

maybe the intake boot has a split in it and only opens when in the vertical position

My Mag was doing the same I checked boot and fuel line pulled carby off saw and lightly blew air in through inlet and all holes and vents also the throat put carby back on and it going really well I recon there must have been some gunk in it somewhere yeah just go steady with the air
