Hi all. I've been a bit of a silent member of the forum for a while now, just watching and taking it all in. I am a Scott Bonnar 45 tragic and enjoy tinkering and doing up my little collection. I've recently brought a couple of mowers back to life with a new paint job and decals etc. and am really satisfied with the resault. For anyone who is interested I thought I'd post some photos to check out.

Thanks Deejay for the welcome and your kind words. Yes the 17'' with the briggs is on the next to do list, the Rover and 17'' fitted with the Kirby are fairly tidy so I'am going to leave them be for now. As of today the renovated 17'' in my previous log has a new home

Hi Bergy, What a superb job you did on that 45. Honestly I intend to do one just like it having done two concourse HG Holden Premiers that won trophies, but I want to use the machine myself on my Santa Anna Couch lawn and not to on sell. We have a guy over here in Parafield Gardens SA that rebuilds them and puts them up on eBay all the time. I'm sure you've seen them. I love the looks I always get from stuck up Honda slasher mower owners that can't believe their eyes when they see a SB in use and I get Jehova Witnesses knocking on my door to ask me about my lawn and not try and give me a copy of "The Watchtower" My question is how and where did you obtain that exact colour hammertone green which is the closest thing I've seen on a Model 45. I understand that shade was used on mid 1970's machines and yours was probably a very late 1960's machine with that original dark green as is my 14 inch B&S mower. My 17 inch is much the same colour as your finished item. Cheers, BB

Hi bonnar bloke, glad you appreciate my work. Yes the 45's are great machines and I recon they have heaps of character. As far as the paint goes that I used ,I simply took the catcher into my local Colour Stop paint shop and they done a great job of colour matching by eye. The formula they used was 2 litres of hammerdry silver using Wattyl Ultra Tint. 360-45
370-71.5
550-95.75
I found the hammerdry very user friendly and went a long way. With the two litres I have painted the two mowers in the photos and have enough left to do another. For undercoat I used two 400 gram aerosol cans of Wattyl Super Etch industrial primer (grey)per mower. My 17 inch in the photo, going by the B&S engine code is a 1977 model and the 20 inch was built in 1974.

Love the restoration mate. Particularly love the paints you've used. I'm hoping to get something the same for my SB45 resto. If I were to take those 3 sets of numbers (360-45, 370-71.5 & 550-95.75) into the paint shop, with the Wattyl Ultra Tint info, is that all they would need to reproduce it?

Also, how did you paint it on? Could they put it in spray cans for you or did you have to use a proper spray gun connected to a compressor? I was thinking of getting it professionally spray painted or powder coated but I've seen a few people on here spray theirs at home and it looks just as good so I am interested in trying that.

Sorry for the belated reply. That formula should be all the information a good auto paint shop would need to reproduce that paint. I painted my Scotty at home myself with a spray gun. The hammerdry is very forgiving, easy to use and dries fast. I encourage you to paint yourself. Its a lot cheaper and more satisfying.

And thanks for the reply mate....Wow! 7 Scotties and counting... I must admit that is an unusual catcher on the machine second from the right hand end, what is the story there?
Also, there are the original clear background catcher decals available, if you want some information, just send me a PM.

Thanks rolla16v and Deejay. That is a home made catcher that came with that mower when I bought it Deejay. Its not to badly made and does the job nicely. And I'll keep those decals in mind when I need some more.

Clearly, you are keeping the great names of Scott Bonnar and Rover alive.

I've got to ask: given the extensive range of 45s, what is the back story?
Have you always liked this model? Was it an experience you grew up with?

Yes my obsession with cylinder mowers goes back many decades watching my dad mow the couch lawn with an old Atco with its fuel tank wired to the handlebars. Only about ten years ago I bought a house with couch lawn, then soon got an old Scott Bonnar with a Kirby engine. I then gust kept on upgrading then started doing them up. I like the style of the Scottys and the fact that parts are readily available and they were Australian made, in fact I believe some of the parts were actually made here in Toowoomba.
