I will put some pictures up as soon as i can as i have a few questions about the Choke set up on the series 5 and the special.
The Choke set up on the series 5 has the long snorkel with the round air filter and the twist piece in the centre but i suspect the Special should have the small twist choke but with not much if anything of a air filter set up which seems odd.Any thoughts /suggestions appreciated.

The model 5 special had three different types one was black with a creamy coloured twist top had red writing on them (the Victa replacements didn't have the red writing,but were the same). The second was a black one that didn't have a twist top and was also screwed to the handle. The last one (which was on the later models) was a big black one that was down near the engine. It also had a knob in the middle with the coke setting on it. If I get time and don't forget I'll take and put some pictures of them up.

Used the series 5 to mow the foot path today and it went well. I have the rewind starter to fit to get it back to the way it was so that is next on the Agenda.
I will check out the engine no's and post them soon.Just wondering which choke/air filter assembly fits the Special.

OK very nice both seem to be in very good condition.Of-course one is better than the other.I take it it has been restored at some point.What you have there is two Model 5 Specials.The only different's is the restored one is the 2nd version and the other is the 3rd version.The 3rd version doe have the correct air cleaner however it should be on a shorter hose that keeps it down next to the engine.The other should or should I say could have one of two different ones.One is black and the other has a black shaft then a creamy coloured twist top.I'll get some photos for you and stick them up tomorrow some time.

Hi all

Been a tad busy trying to get a few more bits repaired for the mowers.
I had 2 spare sets of axles so i have replaced the wheel stubs in both sets as they were worn.
I picked up another old victa 18 mainly for parts and have basically stripped it down
to build up another base i got with the special.
The base came with a motor but had nothing up top from the coil plate up
so slowly sorting out what i need for that.
One set of axles will be used in it's build up.

In the process of ordering the Avocardo Hammertone green paint from Jeff English in Bundaberg.
They are only just back up and running today which is great to hear and they weren't to badly affected.
I will post some picks when i get a chance.
Just wondering what a Carby spacer is there for besides
moving carby away from barrel?

The spacer was added to pull the carby away from the engine. As Victa found that because of where it was it was causing evaporation in the carby and stalling the engine. I'm not 100% sure (as there is no paper work with this to prove this theory) but it is believed that they were installed after they were sold. Put on by Victa mechanics during a service,(as the theory goes),but don't quote me on that. In saying that that's what they are there for anyway.

Agreed on the vapour lock/evaporation theory, a few automotive engines had similar problems that were overcome by water cooling or spacing, Chrysler being one of them. This theory seems to be relevant to more than one Victa model.
Funnily though, my alternate initial theory was one of vibration and fuel leakage through this excessive vibration as it was a larger balanced rubber spacer, and was more a trial as it seems only this model around the series 3 period ran it...then it seems to have disappeared. I think if you look at the spacer it is slightly angled?
Make sure the angle points away from the handlebar,might make it a bit easier to fit?..Anyways just sharing my initial theories. But the evaporation theory seems to be the more plausible.

It was the idea, but I'm not sure it was as good as they first thought. I don't think it really solved the problem entirely.

Hi there vic 18, I just come across an 18 that was my grandfathers, it has the round choke assembly but the hose is short, the patent number is 41427/58. I'm not sure if it's the same as yours but would be interested to know. I'm new to this as well but think I got the 18 bug too.The engine number is A1 4739 and on the lower crank case there is a 4, is yours similar?
