Anyone know the thread size and length of bolt that holds the fuel tank/carby onto the cylinder head?

The carb does not attach to the head. I assume you mean the bracket from the head.
Theres a bolt in next to the fuel cap. Its a 5/16 thread. Head bolt out of another motor works well.
The bolt at the front is 1/4. Ive seen smaller screws with a nut, zip ties and wire. If this is not done up right and someone keeps using it the mount can break off the top of the tank. And also on the later ones it can break the plastic inlet manifold as well.

It's the long one near the fuel cap and is spaced out. Pretty sure it bolts through to the head. The part number is 691640 Fuel Tank Bolt

It bolts into a lug the side of the block or crankcase.
Its a side valve, the head is about a 1" thick bit of aluminium. Thats it, nothing fancy.
Yes if it has the starter on top it will have a spacer. If it has the starter on the side (pull up type), no spacer. Yes the head bolt off a briggs the same as the one you are fixing. Its a little bit longer than it needs to be but will do the job.
Or if you ever had holdens or falcons you might find one or two that will work in your bolt bucket.
