Hello all,
I would appreciate assistance with a rattling mower discharge chute cover.
I inherited a vintage self-propelled, walk-behind, Rover Mower, model 32113, with a side discharge chute cover which always rattles very loudly when mowing without the catcher. (The rattle can be heard over the engine noise.)
The chute cover mounting shaft is fitted with two springs which would appear to be provided to force the cover closed whenever the catcher is removed. The springs, as currently fitted, have no closing effect at all, and only its dead weight swings the cover closed- but it is a loose closure and rattles like hell.
I am wondering if anyone can help with this.
I have attached photos for information - of mower with discharge cover removed, of the inside and outside faces of cover showing fitted springs. (The inside face view has the U-bracket folded back for clarity.)
The cover pivots on a shaft w2hich is retained by a U-bracket bolted to the mower deck. The cover is press-fitted to the shaft. As fitted, the springs and shaft rotate with the cover - there is no spring tensioning action. [Linked Image]

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mustang, I think you have answered your own question....you need to replace the springs; this will force the cover closed and the rattle should decrease.
Where to get the springs from, would be the question. wink
Maybe Bruce or one of our members will chime in here and give you some advice. grin

Hello, Deejay,
Thanks for the input. The shaft, springs, and cover all currently rotate as a single unit on the U-bracket. The inside free ends of the springs would need to be quite long to lock against the U-bracket in order to "tension up" as the cover is raised to the open position - but maybe you are correct - the springs may have been previously (modified/buggered up) by persons unknown.

I would be interested to know if new springs are required, and if so, where I could obtain them.
