Hi Again .i have a old mustang 160 but the bl..... catcher wont stay on the latch on mower ,went and found another mower samemodel or it has the same catcher setup,hence i was going to change bodys but the catcher wont stay on it either ,photos attached can i bend it or what do i do to fixe it ,the rear flap is in good condittion ,its not sloped out..awaiting your replies graham

Ty (Mr. Davis) is the main man on that problem, but he's not on much lately due to pressure of business.

You probably know how that catcher works: lift up the rear door by using the pivot lever on the right side, slide the catcher forward so the bracket inside the catcher on the right side supports the door, do a weird twist of the catcher to manoeuvre the bottom lip of the catcher around an obstacle on the bottom right side of the rear opening in the base, then slide the catcher forward while holding the thumb catch down. You know whether you have put it on correctly because the front top edge of the catcher drops all the way down to flush over the full-width ridge on the top rear of the base. If it does not drop all the way down, you did not engage the thumb catch correctly, and the catcher will fall off. It took me several mows to get the hang of it when I first got one of those mowers. Fortunately mine was a 4 stroke or I wouldn't have bothered, it would have been on the nature strip for the council to worry about.

Two things to check, firstly, the catch mechanisim may need to be bent slightly further back to engage better with the latch bar on the catch flap, this may take a little experimentation, so move it in very small increments.

Secondly, check the condition/existance of the black support peice, this should be mounted just inside the mouth of the catcher, over on the left side of the mouth, it's function is to help support the flap to prevent it pulling free of the lach during operation.

The thumb latch does nothing with reguard to holding the catcher on.

The catcher hangs on the back of the base. So it needs to sit right.
It should just sit there once you hang it, push the mower about here there and everywhere and it shouldnt fall off.

The thumb latch holds the door up.


On those older mustangs, looking in opening at the front of the catcher on the left theres a black plastic thing with a lip on the bottom that Ty said about.
You need to hold the door up so it slides in over the top of the black bit, this will hold the door up pretty much 90% open. Then lift the door the last bit with the lever and it will lock in the thumb latch.


As grumpy said, its a bit of a sideways jiggle to get the thing on right.



Looking at the picture its the right catcher.

The later catchers have an opening thats a bit shorter and dont quite sit right on the back of the mower.
Sit the catcher on, then using the side lever lift the flap up and it should lock into the thumb catch by itself.

On those older ones the rear door is longer with the spring loaded flap on the bottom, so the plastic bit in the catcher is two fold, the catcher wont hang with the door down, and when you start taking the catcher off the black plastic thing holds the door up so it doesnt drag grass out with it.
