Where abouts is the noise coming from? to begin with I would roll the mower on its side, take the spark plug lead off and spin the blade disc a few times to see if it is hitting anything. Could also be worth checking the exhuast for holes as they can make what sounds like a tick noise if its rusted through in the wrong place.
