I just picked up a Rover Baron 45 with a B&S 3.5hp engine. It only cost $25's and I bought it as a project. Overall it is in good condition.
However it does not appear to have spark, I have another sparky but I think it won't work either. I don't know if it has points or anything.
Hear are the numbers off it.

Model: 92908 Type: 1963 02 Code: 78102302

Any ideas on when it was made etc. I know it is a 148cc as most of the stickers are still intact. The engine itself is yellow in colour, don't know if that helps.

The machine was made in 1978 and yes it does have points. They are under the flywheel.

Thanks for the fast reply, I have just downloaded a manual and parts list for my model, from Briggs and Stratton.

My older brother and I are just checking the coil and points now.

Well that was the best $25's I have ever spent.
An earth strap I think it was, connects the points arm to the pivot post. It was broken off, a dab off solder and the mower was good as new. I got it from the dump.

I'll put it in to a mower shop for a tune up but that is it.

G'day.

Yes, tips are a great resource of old lawnmowers that normal people believe are no longer worth anything. They are normally not worth anything to your average person as it would cost so much dough to fix if you got a shop to do it. If a shop had to replace the earth lead, most would replace the complete magneto set-up which is $100+. i have picked up many from hard-rubbish which have also been great.

But getting to my point, if you get a little practice, there is absolutely no need to take it to a mower shop for a tune-up. Replace the spark-plug if it looks **** , change the oil and clean the filter if it's one of the sponge-type ones. and tune the carby, then you'll be doing exactly what your average shop would do.
