Hi all me again with questions regarding my victa 18 restoration :-) when painting in hammertone is it necessary to apply clear coat or not? i ask this because i did a test run and the clear coat seems to somewhat diminish the hammered effect and smooth the finish out...

Hi, Hammer Tone paint does not require a clear coat.

For best results prime the material to be painted first. The heaver the application the more prominant the hammer effect will be. Also hammer tone paints develop in hardness upto a few weeks after they have been painted.

100% agree with Jarrad.Surface preperation is not as important with Hammer finish,as it covers minor imperfections with minimum coats.Sandblasted or new surfaces do not require primer.Hammertone finishes of the era/period your Victa was made did not use an undercoat.Spray tin hammer finish in my opinon requires more coats and does not offer quite as good a patina.Best results are achieved by a gun.Because of its consistency, hammer finish if sprayed correctly gives the appearance and depth that a clear coat offers anyway.Did you make a colour choice yet Luvpsi?

I have settled on Alpine Green Hammertone finish after finding it very hard to source the original colour, especially in a can frown Alpine green is also used by another member that did a restoration here a while ago i think..

The machine is dismantled and now the process or cleaning individual parts, painting and assembly begins smile

thanks heaps for your help, i also prefer to go without clear coat.

Hammertone paint has silicon in it, that can make it difficult for other paints to stick over the top of it.

Other thing with hammer tone is that you need the correct thinner to mix with it to be able to spray it.
You can get a very good result with a brush or roller as well.

Maybe but you can't bet the affect from a spray gun.Oh and no need for a clear coat.I'm not even sure clear would stick to it for very long.As Bob said there is silicon mixed into the paint. That's what gives it the affect.
