OK got a phone yesterday to pick up 2 mowers so off I went down to Wanniassa in the ACT.I found these 2 sitting for me.
To my surprise they both run and run well. The 4 stroke just has some handle problems which I have fixed.Needs a new high adjuster an the plastic teeth have broken and to record the starter. Can anybody tell me what sort of engine is on the four stroke as it doesn't look anything like a Briggs engine. Not sure what I'm going to do with the Sunbeam, possibly use it for spares not sure yet.
The 4-stroke engine is a Tecumseh, I'm curios to see that one running in person, as I have not actually seen one of those engine working properly yet!
Cheers Ty

Well it does work and it works well.I would have mowed my lawns with it except the handles were not that good.I just have to find a pin for the lock down piece and the handles will be all good now.
They are a PITA to pull down to do even the most simple thing. Try just putting in a new starter rope, have to pull the whole cover off, as the starter pops through from the underside, not over the top like the smaller motors. Its a chore.
[Censored] I don't like that idea.Only problem is I do have to do it as the cord is fraying and it is going to break.I really need to sell this bugger to.So I guess I'm in for some work with it then.
Frayed where?? If its above the starter you could just shorten the cord so its back down on the engine.
Its not that hard, just more complicated than it should be.
You need to pull the cover off where the throttle cable goes on. Theres bolts in under there. The air inlet tube where it goes on the carb needs to come off, the two bolts you can see, total pigs of things, you need a real skinny socket. Its basically undoing the carb. Getting the tank off is a total [Censored] too. Fun stuff.
...and that's the way it was done Joe.Didn't bugger around with the stupid handle it had on it.Why they made those longer cords is beyond me.I think it's harder to start than down on the engine.
I think they were stuck with the long cords because of the safety handle. Mower manufacturers other than Honda had the safety handle stop the engine when you released it, so you had to be holding the safety handle to be able to start the mower. That was going to be awkward, and perhaps a bit hazardous, with the starter cord in the usual place. The solution they chose was the extremely ugly arrangement with the starter cord attached to the handlebar. It was another American design triumph like the one General Motors made when they improved the appearance of the Pontiac GTO version of the Monaro by installing a front end panel that had been badly amputated from the front of a pig's head.
Not only that but why on earth did they put it on the left side, great for a lefty but every one of these mowers had the pull rope on the left hand side.
There was never a bail bar on these, perhaps in the american market the engine did. I remove the engine brakes where possible, its just plain common sense to not play with the mower while its running.
Grumpy, try convincing a yank that the GTO originally came from australia.... Been there doen that
Thats right they are stapled, You can get the staple out and reuse the knob. You might have to run a drill bit up through it so you can poke a new rope in. They are actually a pretty good knob. Better than them rubber briggs ones.
