Hi all

Have came across this 17 inch Rover / Scott bonnar.

It is one of the green units badged Rover/Scott Bonnar. I assume this is the model before the colour changed to red and they were badged as a Rover.

Appears to be in reasonable nick. Has better reel than my mower and a newer Briggs Engine. However what was the build quality like on this model, is it as good as the 1976 vintage Bonnar.

Would I be wise to grab this unit and give it a freshen up, or put all the good bits from this one onto my Red painted Scott bonnar (Reel, Sprockets and Engine) and then sell this one off to recoupe some costs.

Hi Jarrad, just to clear up one point...after the period of Rover-Scott Bonnar production, as you have said, it morphed into the Rover 45; available in Rover red and also Rover green. (in fact I have a catcher in Rover green, as a spare) It is a solid bright green, similar to the Rover-Scott Bonnar colour on the machine in your pic.

Re: your question....I am led to believe that during the period of the company change over...Scott Bonnar was still building the chassis...so that machine would be as good as any hammertone green late model Scotty.
You could go either way...swap the good bits over to yours....or give this one a clean up/ cosmetic restore and sell it....or restore it as an original Scotty in the original colours as a 'keeper' wink

Here is a close up of the reel for comment.

On the right bearing carrier, what is that on the top? I know the SB had an oiling point, but I thought Rover did not have these. And this is not like the SB one anyway

Hi Jarrad, mate I would need a close-up pic of the bearing cap to see what it is....the reel appears in good nick with plenty of meat left....I doubt its ever been sharpened in its life....
BTW, that chassis was made by Rover not SB, and I can tell that by the grass-box rubber support blocks.....Scotties had a square spot-welded spigot with a circumferential groove that you push the rubber block on to....Rover's are secured by a nut and bolt. wink

Jarrad, it may be a couple of days before Deejay can get back to you: he lives in Wagga Wagga, which is flooded, and he has no internet at present.

Thanks grumpy, we had a few dramas here....all good now though. grin

Jarrad, I have never seen a bearing cap like that before, I have a sneaking suspicion that this might be describes as "tenants improvements"....In other words the oiler may have popped out and the previous owner popped a bit of tubing in the hole.... But I agree it is a "What the" moment. wink
