A Family member has a 'Weedeater Gear Drive gas Edger' Model number GE21, Serial Number 1K263J333

The blade hit a piece of concrete and now the blade and the shaft it is on is loose and can be pulled out of the motor, they were going to go and buy a new edger but i thought i would try and save them some money and fix it. The shaft doesnt look damaged at all and they have been told that they have broken something in the gear drive mechanism and that parts arnt available for them anymore.. I dont know how they came to that conclusion as there are no witness marks on and of the screws / bolts so i think its just a guess.

The edger is in good nick otherwise.

Anyone have any ideas?

Any chance its a rebadged atom edger or even similar? Grumpy pulled one with a broken top end apart the other day.

Here is the complete leg of the Atom:

Aside from it probably not fitting, I can't imagine your old edger is worth the cost of shipping that huge great leg from Melbourne to Sydney. However, the parts are still in my garbage bin until it is emptied next Wednesday morning.

This is what it looks like, but it has a wheel on the front not a pad.

Josh,

The bet is the circlip has come off and mixed in with the gears. If you are lucky you will only need to clean it out and replace the circlip. cheers2

Okay i had a look at it today, it had 2 smashed circlips with no gear damage which was good news, until we started to clean the grease out and found that the whole gear housing had a large crack in it, worth fixing?

Josh, it is not economically feasible to weld up the gear housing. Unless you can get a second-hand one easily and cheaply, the edger would appear to have met its doom.

I Agree with Grumpy, personally I would make a quick trip to the local tip shop, and scout out ebay for a few minutes, Just to see if I could maybe find a cheap unit for parts, but otherwise it's probably not really worth it.

You could try to contact the manufacturer to find out the cost of replacing the part, but I can't imagine the cost being too friendly.

If you really want to fix it up, pop it aside for now, and keep an eye on the tip shops and Ebay, as well as posting a request in the wanted section, with as much detail as you can about the specific part, one of our members might well be able to help you out.

If you plan to keep the machine while looking for the part, let me know, I can't promise anything, but I am happy to scout out the tip shops here and see if anything turns up for you.

Cheers
Ty

Set it aside and keep an eye out.
Eventually something might turn up. Ive never ever seen one like it before.

If the motor works ok and is good to go when its removed from the machine some aspiring young lad might be able to mate it up to a push bike.

I have seen similar, Infact one mob are selling something not to different at bunnings currently.

I will be down at the tip shop later this week, I'll see what's there, just in case!

Cheers
Ty
