Hi All,

My 2001 Jonsered hedger (21ht)just died the other day. I had just rebuilt the carby and fitted a new exhaust and she was running a treat. Went to start it the other day and she spluttered a bit, then I cranked at half choke and it ran for about 5 seconds then that was it! It has totally lost it's spark! I disconnected the kill switchwiring and still no spark, I turned it over with my drill and yeup you guessed it no spark! I am at a loss how the coil has maybe failed?? I check the resistance and it reads 2500 ohm accross the two terminals. Can any one shed some light on this for me? I am thinking that a coil wont be cheap for this unit and will be hard to find as well. Any help or opinion is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Cheers

Hi Bruce,
I tired another plug that I had but not a new one, maybe I will go and buy a new one tomorrow and check it out. Incidentally just tonight I stuck a bright nail into the cap and turned the motor again in the dark and noticed a small blue spark if I held it real close to the block. I guess this means the coil maybe ok????

Will try a new plug and report back.

Thanks happy new year to all!

twinner, if it won't deliver a 3 mm blue spark directly from the plug lead to ground, when you pull the starter once briskly, there is an ignition fault. Does it have points, or electronic ignition, with or without a module that is separate from the coil?

Hi Grumpy,

There is no points and no other module. I thought the electronic ignitions have a separate transistor. Maybe it is built into the coil? I am really lost on this one but as I haven't tried the new plug yet I can't confirm it's the coil. Will keep testing, like chasing my tail at the moment

An electronic magneto can be either a single unit, or a coil and a separate electronic switch. The single unit is more common. If your spark is weak, try checking the gap between the laminated iron core of the module, and the surface of the flywheel - they are normally 0.010-0.012" air gap between. This is fairly critical. Check also that there is not a lot of metal crud stuck to the magnet(s) built into the flywheel. Finally, check that the module is properly earthed to the body of the engine, with no corrosion or rust interfering with the contact. Inspect the kill switch and associated wire from the magneto to the switch, making sure there is no leakage to earth. You might try disconnecting the kill wire at the switch and move the wire that runs back to the magneto so it isn't near anything, then retest the spark intensity.
