Hi there!
I have been gleaning info from the sit for the past week or so because of my recent SB45 purchase. I hope to get the Scottie running and cutting sweetly before too long. It needs a bit of tlc and I'm hoping to get some help or advice as needed from all you lads and lassies who know these things like the back of your hands.

I don't know the history of my machine which cost me the princely sum of $100, but it appears to have been neglected. The guy who sold it to me said it hadn't been used for about 3 years. I have drained the old (like runny BBO sauce!) oil and replaced it with new; plus a new cj8 plug and air filter to replace the crumbling one. It sprang to life on the 4th pull but the throttle cable doesn't seem to have much effect (Vacu Jet carby problems?) It bogs down and dies easily at any attempt to cut grass.

Can someone point me to a good workshop or travelling service outfit that can sharpen things up please? Adelaid hills repairers would be good though I could take it to Adelaide if need be.

Hi Beammeup (I'll probably accidentally call you Scotty from time to time, but you probably expected that) and welcome to Outdoorking. You seem to have a good start with that machine: a Briggs engine, and a reel that looks as if it has never been sharpened, so it should last a while. It seems to me to have been a very good deal for $100, though it will soon become a worse one if you go to a mower shop for a simple engine tune. From your short description it sounds as if your speed control cable (it isn't a throttle control, it is a governed engine and the control lever just adjusts the set speed the engine is to run at) may be out of adjustment, or its lower end's cable outer may not be clamped to keep it from moving. Does the engine speed up and slow down when you move the speed control lever, with the mower stationary?

Welcome aboard!

That Scotty looks like she should come up quite nicely, I'm glad to see a few older Scotty's building up recently on the forum, as it's where I'm planning to take the reel-mower side of my collection, particularly the model 45's like yours.

I can think of a few issues that might cause the problems you are describing, but I'm not an expert on Scotty's or Briggs (I'm learning though) we have some people here very knowledgeable on your engine, and others who are very passionate about the Scotty's, so I'm sure you will find all the help you need.

Might I suggest you pop a thread in the repairs and maintenance section, to help get the ball rolling faster on your issue.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks for the responses.

OK, I'll try to notice more closely (accurately) what Grumpy has mentioned and will post my findings to the repairs and maintenance section in the next day or so.

hi beammeup cj8 plug is a cold plug u can also try a BPMR7A plug better suited to aussie fuel/climate cheers steve...

Hi to beammeup, and a big warm welcome to the forum! grin It's great to welcome another Scott Bonnar owner on board and like me, another Model 45 owner!! yay

Now to your machine, your model number says it is a 17" and of the same vintage as mine, that is a late Model 45 and
we can tell that by the front roller end caps and the plastic tops on the grass deflector screws. The thing that has me tossed, is the shorting strip on top of the Briggs to stop the engine...most machines from this era stopped the engine by pulling the speed control back to the stop position.

If you can please post the full string of numbers on the cowling of the Briggs, we will be able to tell you the year the engine was assembled...but unfortunately Scott Bonnar serial numbers do not reflect the month or year of manufacture, tho we can get close... wink

The paint colours on the machine are not original, but we may be able to point you in the right direction if you wish to restore to original condition.
