I understand.1970s Victa hi arch mowers with g3 & g4 carbies do it for me.
It seems to have something to do with childhood.
The humble Victa mower was the first motorised thing I was at the controls of and the interest has just stuck.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hi Gary Got the 2 pics O.K and have replied in some depth as to what I think.
On looking back thru the posts on this subject I see Bruce refers to it as Villiers -Hurricane, I seem to recal the Hurricane was ageneral purpose engine and did not realize it had any connection at all with Villiers
Two of these Huricane engines were of 125 and 180 cc and were used on Atom outboards / I dont thin Atom were any relation to the present day Atom range of garden edgers but could be wrong.

Any way getting back to Gary's mopwer. a
At around the time it wass made there were as I have just counted in ACL piston ring book for the year 1963 no less than 60 Yes 60 lawn mowers here on the Aussie market. Some I ihave seen and put under the hammer and they have to to smelters. Some I have still got frames etc of which are not enev in the book Pinnock for one. Singer for another.
What I am getting at here is the fact that so many were made they have been forgotten about. I have a pic of a Rover mower chassis . Very nicely made with a side wheel adjuster and though I have in the past sent pics of it to Rover ,they dont know anything about it.
So what hope have we got about fing out who made Gary"s mower. Does any body have a Website where pics could be posted to so we can all have alook?????????????/ Regards Joe

Hi Joe and All,

I have read your post and I could start up another forum just for pictures of mowers but it will take a few weeks to setup.

Let me know what you all think as I will need pictures sent to me so that I can upload them to the site on the Bulletin Board. I have done this before on some of the replies that I have made.

This is the type of picture sent in by Gary:

Hi Bruce and Everyone
I beleive in the pictures idea. A lot of history is being lost as regards the motor mower industry. . Fir example ,a lot of viewers know about reel mowers like Atco Greens Webb etc but who would know about Champion .Thre is one of the with pics on Ebay right now. I did not know they made areel mower so we can all learn.
Carry on with ther good work Bruce Regards Joe

Hi .Gman The JAP engines were indeed British but I think you will find that most of the mowers that we have seen in Aussie were mowers that were made here usung the imported engines
JAP engines , were taken over by Villiers around 1945 and were taken over completly sometime in the 1960 era J.A.P was the shortened version of the founders name John Alfred Prestwich. He made many types of engines and my 1963 ACL piston Ring Catalogue lists about 14 engines used here in Aussie on small lawnmowers and up to something like a 9 hp Twin cylinder which was used here a lot on swing saws. I think the engines were quite famous as used on the Three wheelers around 1930 up to wartime days and looked real great stuck out on the front in the open air for everyone to look at. Big Vee Twins
If Bruce gets the picture thingo up and running I will send him a pic of the Jap fitted to a lawn mower fron around the 1960 period Regards Joe

Hi Gaz Got the pics of your mowers and they look great. With regards to the Jap isent you an email offline asking you did it have any model numbers on the engine . On thinking back I did havean engine tyhe same looking as yours but it did n ot have anything stamped on to indicate which model it woukd be . This nay help if you get the chace to look inside.............. Model 80 is 46mm Bore Model 2a and 2s are 51.5 mm Bore but these are both 4 stroke engines so it looks like any thing in 2 stroke is the model 80. I like the model Scott Bonnar you sent pic of and I have a set of Std rings here if you need some 57 mm Std Regards Joe
