Hi.
Wonder if someone could help this female who is sick of trying to get a second hand 2 stroke victa to start.
I have arthritis, and this thing has become bain of my life.
Quick question - which way is tap when it is turned on - straight across or up&down??
And I am having all sorts of problems getting it started. It takes ages, gets started goes for a short moment then dies.
Or it smokes a LOT and yes am using 25:1 ratio oil to petrol
Please please help help2 new

The tap should be straight up and down, more pointing to the rear of the engine.

Assuming it is a plastic type carburettor with the white primer cap, I would suggest cleaning out the area behind the white primer cap being careful not to lose the needle. in this part there is the brass jet (the screw that holds the primer on) the float (looks like a little white box with a hinge on the end, the needle (goes back in pointy side up) and a black O ring seal ($2 from any mower shop at the most).

A new spark plug is not always required but can help matters, they simply screw out, put the new one in and put the spark plug lead back on. The air filter could also do with replacing once a year, thats at the top of the handle under a black plastic cap.

The easiest way I find to start them is, turn the fuel on and wait for a few seconds, push the primer button half a dozen times (if you cannot hear a very faint ticking noise when the primer bulb is pressed it is not priming and you need to clean that area I was talking about back at the start) put it straight onto run and pull the rope.

If the fuel has been left on in the past it will flood making it very hard to start, to unflood it, remove the spark plug, with the fuel turned off pull the rope a dozen times, dry the spark plug and refit.

Thanks for all that info Joe,
I got guy next door to start it for me, however it seems to be a permanent problem when it is cold.
He did say spark plug wasn't quite in therefore misfiring. I hate having to ask neighbours for help, hate being an incapable female who has arms and shoulders that don't like the pull rope on them!!
Thanks heaps,

The tap across or horizontal is off. The tap should always be off when the engine is not running.

Thanks Bob,
I have been turning it off and letting it run until it empties the line of petrol so there is none sitting when its not being used. Hope you understand what I mean.

Yes i understand that.

Sometimes that can be the problem.
If you are trying to start it before the bowl and line have filled with fuel again it can give trouble.
I usually suggest turning the fuel on, then pushing it out of the shed.

This time of year, if you are mowing regular i would be inclined not to let it run 'dry' like that.

Its your mower, they all have a little personality of their own, sort out what works and once you are familiar with it you will be its master.
