Saw this on eBay and snapped it up for $600.
Ariens Sierra 1440H Model number 936306 Serial is under 500 so its and early one. Anyone tell me what year?? I thought 98 or there abouts.

Engine is an OHV Briggs 14HP model 28P777 0644-A1 961002ZD

Not sure what the trans is, its Hydro.

Not the bargain i thought it was but it will come up well for just a bit over $1000.

Blows smoke when you start it.
Needs a new battery. Needs new blades.

Thats what i knew when i bought it.

Bonnet flew off on the way home despite having a strap over it. Was pretty funny seeing it flying through the air in the mirror. Had to hurry back quick smart, was on a narrow busy road. No one got it thankfully. Id say looking at it that its not the first time the bonnet had been for a skate down the road. I wondered why the bonnet was so scratched up.

When i picked it up, the tyres are all perished with plugs in the splits and slow leaks and dont have much life/time left in them, a bit but not much. Needs a good tidy up, a bit of flaking paint/surface rust on the chassis in spots. Steering is a bit stiff. Park button not working. Have to flip some lever on the back to put it in neutral to push it, not sure whats up with that.
Needs a little bit of work on the front of the deck. Oil change and a service, if i can work out how i will probably do valve clearances etc as well. Good wash and a polish up.

Anyone had anything to do with the trans on these?? Is it servicable?? Or do i just leave it alone??
Are they pretty tuff?? Towing anything more than and esky full of beer advisable???

Who made it and is there a manual in the manuals section for it?? I dont see any Ariens stuff in there at all so im assuming its made by someone else.

Id say its done a lot of work then the guy i bought it off got it. He put the arm on the pedal for his dissabled son so he could drive it and mow the lawn. Only had a 1/4 acre block.

And the guy gave me this for nothing.
Missing the coil. It stopped and wasnt sparking and he took it off and.........................

Bob, if you search Ariens on Outdoorking you'll find a few threads, including one for a model 935005 that needed parts for its Dana/Foote transaxle:
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/u...n=1607&Words=ariens&Search=true#Post3842

Also, in the past few days there has been a thread on a very old Ariens ride-on (1960s) that was imported into Australia under the Mobilco label:
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/u...=6036&Words=ariens&Search=true#Post28535

If you Google Ariens you'll find they are a reputable manufacturer of small machines including mowers, snowblowers, etc - I don't know if they were imported into Australia in any numbers, though.

Here's a link for the 1440H parts list, not very detailed though. Doesn't go into detailed exploded views of components though.

Ariens

I can't help but think that it looks sorta similar in design to the Victa 3010T I have sitting here, especially in the rear gaurd/ seat base area.

Going by the parts diagram, the rear drive looks similar to the drive of an Electrolux Craftsman Auto I had here for an engine rebuild a few weeks ago, it had a 38" cut.

Greg, is Gravely an alternative brand name for Ariens products?

It seems that Gravely may be linked with Ariens. From the Ariens site when you look up parts, it automatically goes to Gravely.

Maybe it's the same company, but with a diferent trading name for the parts.

Theres a few about but not that common.

I figured it was made by someone for Ariens. Ariens mainly do the out front zero turn jobs from what ive seen. Not even sure if they make them or they are made for them.

I did do a bit of google and got some forum chatter about someone looking at buying one in the USA so one could assume that they come from there. I think i looked at some history too, Ariens have been about for a long time and bought up a heap of companies along the way.

Most of the bits i need are consumables and easily got. I was more chasing the maker to try and get detailed parts and service info.

Thanks for the links will check them out a bit later. Got to get back outside.

Found out its a model 17.

If you go here with your Ariens model and serial number you can get the manuals.
