Hi guys,

new here- I have been working on a Victa 5/26 - I cant get the thing to drive- its just keeps throwing off the top belt. I have got new belts but it appears that when I use the clutch it makes one drive belt go tight and the other loose.
I have brought the subsciption but I cant see anything on 5/26's

Hope someone can help or me any info.

PS I brought this as an unfinished project so it could be missing something..

Dave, if you have problems after comparing the belt setup with what the manual shows, please tell us and post some pictures. Hopefully we'll have people here who will be able to spot the problem.

Hi, I just reconditioned one of those, and about all I can think of is that if the engine drive pulley isn't in the same plane as the other pulleys, then it will throw the belt off. It's the only pulley that the position can be altered on. It wouldn't have to be far out. Failing that, check to see that the clutch mounts aren't bent.

Great work Greg,

Interesting that you say that the drive belt height could be out. Its had a new motor at some stage.
The blades turn great. Hoping my money clear through paypal tomorrow so I can get access to the manuals. After seeing yours I am keen as mustard to give it a go.

Mine is the red/orange with white wheels. It still has all the stickers on it.

Out of interest how does yours perform?

After comparing the two photos there has to be something wrong the clutch set up. Look at where Greg's clutch pedal sits compared to mine

Thanks Practical.

With the clutch pedal, there should be a lock in the slide on the left of the centre hump where all the controls are. This lock stops the pedal returning too far. Maybe that's the problem. Going by memory, the engine looks much the same, but check the pulley height anyway, maybe the pulley has been put on upside down.

The one I had was a terrible lime green colour when I bought it, and under that was a sand/tan colour. Someone else had obviously had a go at it in it's past. I say had, because that's part of what I do, buy, reco, and then sell.

The performance was quite good, for a 5 HP. Similar to a normal push mower when it comes to thick grass - ride the clutch and let the blades deal with the grass, then you're off again. Once you get used to it, there's no stalling!! lol. The single forward gear is all you need too, any faster and it'd load up the engine way too much.

Stripping the machine is interesting too. After taking off the cutter deck, (I put it up on axle stands), take off steering wheel, column, and shaft, then the centre cover for the controls. Then there's 4 bolts at the rear of the top deck. Then lift the deck at the front, and work in between the top deck and chassis to seperate the brake and clutch from the chassis. The pedal pivot bolts, the brake is above the chassis, the clutch is below, have to be undone. The pedals lift off with the top deck. It's a bit fiddly, and there's linkages that have to be disconected. There's also a tang on the clutch pedal that has to be straightened slightly to get it through the chassis. Then once you've undone the throttle control mounts, the top deck should lift off, just dont forget to hold you mouth with a drop of the bottom lip on the left, tougne rolled, and your left leg in the air. hahaha.

Cheers.

Just thinking about the clutch setup some more, with the levers and slides underneath, I THINK the belt from the clutch to the gearbox remains tight, and it's just the belt from the clutch to the engine that goes loose. Perhaps that belt is too long, which would allow the clutch pedal to return too far. It's times like this I wish I still had the one I reco'd. Hope I've been of some help.

Cheers again.

Hi, it's me again....... hahaha

With the brake adjustment too, if it needs to be done, don't stress over it. Follow the brake rod to where it connects to the brake caliper. If you can, take the rear right wheel off, then the lever that the rod connects too should be visible. The chassis has a semi-circular cutout to allow access to a nut with a split pin through it. Take the split pin out, and adjust the nut, (1/2 inch spanner), until the pedal only has a very slight amount of free play. Then just replace the split pin. A bit of lubricant on the lever where it contacts the caliper push pin helps too. Then put the wheel back on and try it. I set it up so that the park brake held and it works ok. Definately not a brake that will throw you over the front though. hahaha

Thanks for the heads up Greg, I will have a look and see what I can find.

Cheers
