Hi,
I need to remove the engine cowling to access the ignition mechanism etc. I presume the start-rope pulley has to be removed first.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? Is it just a push-on fit and do I need a special puller?

Thanks,
Graham

gra,
Yes you need to remove the starter first and the flywheel is a push on fit. I have sent you information on the procedure regarding the starter.

Hello,
Thanks for the info, Bruce.

Unfortunately, the material you sent seems to relate to mechanised starters.

Mine is the old-fashioned rope start version, and it is the pulley that one wraps the rope around that I am trying to remove.

I suspect it is a push-on fit and that a special puller may be needed to remove it.

Graham

Does it look like a pully (with a rope knot holder in the side) but the aluminium covers it fully (eg no hole in the middle in the top), If so there is a steel hex coming out of the bottom of it and this has an internal thread which screw onto the top of the magneto/flywheel. Hope fully you can hold the blade disc and get a spanner onto the hex it is a standard RH thread. The 18 that I have has the cute little pull starter. But I have one of those pullys from a motor someone gave me. All the best. Daz

Sorry about the delay in replying.

Yes, Joe, I did get the pulley off.
The previous owner seems to have put paint on the thread, which didn't help.

Electradaz, it is the type you described but there was no room to get a spanner in between the pulley and cowling. (approx 2mm)

I ended up making a special tool using the rope notch as an anchoring aid.

It's all back together now and running like new.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi. Thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth. I'm discovering the joys of Victas, and have had the same problem. In the end I used a 13/16th spanner on the nut below the pulley and an oil filter wrench (a few dollars at Kmart) to grip the pulley. Came apart very quickly. Hope anyone finds this useful.
Terry.
