Daniel, If the top of the stem is broken then it is time to replace the decompressor.

There is a clip that can be a worry, can you pop up a pic of the valve and the full unit?
Cheers Ty

thanks bruce i was expecting to have to get a new one although something seems missing not broken...
Mr Davis if there is supposed to be some kind of clip it is long gone i would think, the little black plastic top was seperated from the rest of the valve when i pulled this engine apart. i will organise photo's sometime this week as soon as i have some time after work one day.

Of course you wont be able to pull it apart like that if its a sealed one.
New one is about $28 or so. Or you could just whack an old plug in the hole and plug the vacuum line.

Not to mention, if its a sealed one, there is no retaining clip, the end of the poppet is simply machined down to lock it in, so you cant even get by with the plug out at the end.

I have to admit, I've even done the old 'sparky in the deco hole' trick myself, not something i like resorting to, but it can be a good diagnostics trick.
And one of my everyday mowers still has the sparky blocking the hole, the deco gummed up when i needed it, and did not have time to fix it, so i wacked one in, i have been meaning to fit the restored deco back on for some time now.
But yes, it is not ideal in the long run, i prefer to have it right, however, Emmo, if you put a sparky in, and cover the hole in the carby that connects to the deco, its a good way to test the rest of the mower, and see what it needs before deciding on the Job.
It's also a usefull temporary patch job to keep you going till you find the time to buy or restore a valve.
If you do buy a new one, i reccoment going for the clip type ones (i think you can still but them for powertorque) then if it stuffs up again in futre, you can just open it up and fix it.
