Apart from the reproductions available for the Special and such, what are some other ideas for replacing or restoring wheels, particuarly those from 65 - 79, the with the heavy tires.

I would love to find a way of getting replacements that keep with the original styles and weight of the mowers in question.

I have seen some pretty bizzare ways of getting tread back on the mower, but i would hate to end a restoration like this:

makes me wonder though, the amount of effort making that, probably would have been better off buying new wheels! just be sure to check depth of tread every now and then, you dont wanna be caught with bald tyres :P

Yeah heavy wheels!

Funny I just picked up a Victa side thrower (70's series) which has heavy wheels today. Would not have noticed if it wasn't for the mustang VC 160 (80 series) that I also got today, had the inside of the rear wheel missing!

Fast Grass, i dont mean to nit pick, but just for those who may read this, to eliminate conffusion, with your "mustang VC 160 (80 Series)" i'm a little thrown off, there is a VC-Mustang, there is also the VC-160, and the plain Mustang, the VC-Mustang never made it past 1976, whereas the series 80 engine was released 1980. I would guess that you have an early 80's Mustang, with a series 80 Engine.

I have noted some confusion that the term VC refers to full crank engines, this is not the case, VC preceeded the names of some mowers between 1970 and 1976, the VC-160, VC-125, VC-Mustang & VC-Sports, etc, These mowers are badged with the VC before there name, if the VC is not there, then it is not a VC (exept where badges are missing or incorrect), the VC name was also used in advertising to refer to the mowers of this era.

Not trying to have a go or anything, just making sure people get the correct information when reading through.

As for the inside of the wheel missing, yep that seems to plauge the later wheels, its why i prefer the heavy ones, with the solid tires, and would love to find somwhere to get them!!

Ive got a bit of a collection of solid wheels going.

Planning on keeping them if i can. I have a 505 Mustang and i would like a reasonable set of i think its 7" front and 8" rear wheels to put on it, as a mower that size will chew the plastic wheels quick.

And any of my utilites etc. Put solids with bearings on them if i can find some.

I'll keep a look out and just gather them as they come along i think. Deejays link is great, so that will be a usefull sorce. I cant see any sign that somone makes repro's of them.

On a side note, when they are buggered (the core anywhay) i found smashing the middle out of the solid tire makes a good dog toy, our little one eat tennis balls and shop toys, yet she cant get through the tires on these. however, thats only for the rubbish ones.

Hi all in regards to the tin wheels (as they were known as, even-though they were made of steel).There is no repo's as yet.Maybe somebody will do it at some point.I have been informed by a fellow in Brisbane that you can take the tyres of the repo victa 18 special wheels and put them on the tin wheels.They will fit as the groove is the same.They are not quite right but it is closed thing to the real set up.I haven't done it as yet,but when I have restored my Rotomo's I may have to give it a go as the rubber I have is not the beast.

Sounds like it will look better than the above mower!

Oh hell yeah.I was told that only different's was as the original tyre hugged the side of the wheel the special tyre doesn't hug the same.Very similar tread to.So it doesn't look much different.

It's a look all to it's own, thats for sure, took me ages to work out what i was looking at, till i spited the edge of the peice of wire in the tread.

Seems a fair bit of effort to carve up what looks to be an old ride on or small car tire, and lock it on so well with what might be a coat hanger.

Its not something i like to se on such a classic, but for a newer model maybe...

...I am currently working on a 'Super-Frankenstein' mower, its got the late base from a series 80 side throw, with cut-outs for larger wheels, a home made chute and height ajuster, parts of about 3 engines, and the wrong handles, these 'tires' might just be the finishing touch!

Sounds like a strange mower your building there.Yes I think the wheels on the old girl make it look like it's going 4 wheel driving.It's got the mud tyres on.

I love some of the home-job patches i have seen on the mowers i get in, that i have decided to try and combine them all, any suggestions welcome!

Some of the ones i have seen are just too dangerous to replicate.

I did start a thread in the general section to show off busted and mangled stuff.

I think i just found it, i don't think i would want to try the first, and the cracked case might be going to far.

Joe's image of the blades is good, but i do have a weird feeling that might have an ever so small issue cutting grass, call it a hunch!

Its amazing what you find though, once had one where the owner was willing to freely admit his stupidity as he donated the mower. he had got tired of the catch falling off, so he used tin plate to make a bridge, which he extensively riveted to both the base and catcher... essentially, he riveted the base to the catcher, and only realised the madness to his method once it came time to empty the catcher.

The catcher was still full when he donated it.
