Hi,

I've just subscribed to 'Brushcutter Parts List & Manuals' section. Unfortunately it doesn't have the manual I was looking for.

I already have the operator's manual but now need the Service manual for the Stihl FS86 brush cutter. I'm also looking for the parts manual.

There only appears to be one Service/workshop manual (fs 80_85) in the stihl downloads section but it won't download. The downloaded 'file' displays as 0 bytes - so nothing has been actually downloaded. Adobe says the file is damaged.

Many thanks.

Thanks Bruce. I've bought Stihl FS86 quite cheap on ebay and collecting it today. Owner says he's trouble starting it lately hence the sale.

I downloaded the FS80/FS85 service manual successfully this time. Thanks for fixing it. Do you reckon this service manual has all I need to tackle any repairs on the FS86? It's my first stihl machine so I'm sure you're more familiar with these.

I binned a ryobi and made a bit a cash on the parts on ebay recently. Good riddens! Looking forward to having a bit a quality and something worth fixing.

Regards,
Padraig.

Thanks for your post Emmo. Yes, I'd say I could be on here quite a bit looking for help. Hopefully I may be able to help out a little too, although my experience is quite limited and I've bit to learn yet.

Regards,
Padraig.

Just be carefull of stuff that you by from ebay because they are a flee market and cheap is not that good unless you know what you are doing but I am sure you will learn.

Now what I would be doing first is removing the exhaust and checking the cylinder for any damage. If it is scored then you will have trouble but if not then make sure the exhaust port is clean and also check the wire mesh screen for any buildup of carbon.

I would also clean the screen to make sure (you should be able to see through it).

After you have done that I would be checking the fuel pickup in the tank and if dirty then replace it and also replace the spark plug.

Once you have done this and providing the cylinder is good you should be able to start it ok but if not then we will go further.

As to the workshop manual it will be ok for you FS86 as most brushcutters are very similiar in repair procedures. cheers2

Excellent, sound advice Bruce. Thank you. How right you are about Ebay!

At first glance it looks pretty bad. Covers missing from exhaust and air filter side as well as no air filter present on the machine! Throttle cable and starter pulley both seem either stiff or seized.

For EUR25, I wasn't expecting much but at the same time I wasn't expecting it to be quite this bad! Anyways, I've set it aside for few days and over weekend I'll carry out all the sensible checks you mentioned in your post and see if it's worth doing anything with.

I'm sure I'll be back with an update.

Cheers,
Padraig.
