Hi Guys, I am doing up son's 8/30E Series 7 ride on, just moved into a new rental, and I need to do some repairs. I used to have a MTD manual when the 8/30 was mine many years ago but is has since disappeared. Does anyone know the MTD equivalent model number or the MTD Form number for the manual or is there a Victa manual.
Thanks Keith

Keith, I found an old discussion in another forum which claimed that the Victa 8/30 is the same machine as the MTD 133-480 (pull start) or 133-485 (electric start). Here is the MTD owners/parts manual for those machines:
http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/DocGetter?doc=770-4147.pdf

You should be able to tell by looking at the manual whether it really is the Victa 8/30. If it is, please come back and tell us, so that this link can be useful to other people when it is in the archive.

Hello Grumpy,
Had a look at the manual, it is not for a 8/30. The 8/30 has a H pattern gearbox, 3 forward and 1 reverse, but best guess the rest looks pretty much the same. I would think most parts are the same and if nothing else is available may do the trick. I looked on the ID plate for the model number but it has faded away over the years. Thanks again for prompt reply. Keith.

If you want to look at a lot of other MTD ride-ons, just substitute the following numbers for the 4147 in the above URL:
4144, 4145, 4146, 4149, 4150, 4152, 4153, and 4154. None of them seems to have the gear-lever positions you want, though. Straight-line shifts seem to be usual for MTD, except the 4154 has hydrostatic transmission.

Hello Grumpy,

As you similar but no cupie doll. Most of the decks look the same, might be able to use one of these to figure out the belting arrangement and belt sizes.
Thanks Keith.

Keith, it does look as if your mower was sold in the US under MTD's Yardman brand. The gearbox is distinctive.

Hello Grumpy,
Had look at video, the yardman in the video looks a bit more heavy duty then the 8/30. The 3 speed gearbox in the 8/30 is a Pearless unit, not sure what part number.

Thanks for explaining that Keith. I was really impressed with the YardMan in that video - it looked like a ride-on I could relate to (I don't recall a small one I liked previously). It has a chassis, and in particular a front axle, that look like they'll stick around for a while. On the other hand, it didn't look light-weight.

If you find good information on the 8/30 please post it so others can use it.

Hello Grumpy, I have a Simplicity 700 Tractor with lots of attachments that I use around the property, tough little unit for a 7hp jobbie, bit tough. I have done a bit of searching a found that the 8/30 gearbox is a Peerless Series 350 pssibly a 353.

I haven't found any information on that gearbox Keith. If you can give a reference to where it can be found, and a picture or two of your gearbox, that would be useful for the archives.

Does any other 8/30 owner out there have any information on this machine?

Thanks for posting that Bruce - it should help fill the information gap on this model. Is there an owner manual available? They often solve adjustment problems for equipment owners, and prevent mistakes.

Hello Grumpy,

Had a look at the manual, the 133-480/485 is more like a 8-26E than a 8-30. Just about solved most of the problems now, still would be good to have some sort of manual if one ever appears. Thanks for the effort.

Cheers Keith

Thanks for the update Keith. Realistically, a lot of ride-on owners wish they could get hold of a decent workshop manual, or even a detailed owner's manual, but many of them never get what they want. In the end they have to make do with what they can get.

I'll leave this thread open for a couple of days in the hope that someone can help with this, then close it if nothing is heard.
