Hi all

I have been living on half a acre for about 3 years now (we built) and it is all starting to look good. I have a 22' self popelled Toro that I have been using and it has been great a nice fast job smile but a mate has resently given me a 1964 victa imperial 16' cylinder mower and I have started to do about 200m3 of the 1000+ of grass we have.I can not belive the differance it has made in the two months I have had it. BUT it takes forever so I am going to top dress the lawn to make a smoother ride and am starting to look around for a larger cut cylinder mower as I can see me wanting to do the whole 1000 smile

They certainly make a difference, it's because cylinders cut with a clean scissor action rather than tearing and slashing like rotaries. I used to cut my lawn with a push cylinder (recently bought a 2nd hand petrol powered one that I use now), until some stupid scrub turkey decided to drag rocks and stones all through it, and I noticed it was a lot healthier using that than the rotary mower. They make walk behind cylinders up to 30" or at least used to, you might be able to find a second hand one somewhere.
Cheers,
Kelsey

Kelsey, rocks on the lawn might mean a bruised ankle with a rotary, but they mean a $100 resharpen (of both reel and bedknife) on a cylinder mower. A clean lawn is the way to go in both cases, but with a cylinder mower, the alternative is really ugly. For one thing, after just a few resharpenings you need a new reel or to rebuild the old one with new blades.

Yeah, that's why I stopped using the cylinder on it after those rocks appeared. But I've since got rid of all the rocks so hopefully won't be a problem anymore.
