I am just starting rebuilding a Colt 8 and have downloaded the manual , thank you. Had good look at it and most looks faily staightforward but I am preplexed by a length of chain hanging from the rear of the cutter deck. The exploded drawing in the manual (SPV-28) shows the chain but there is no information about where it is attached, how it is adjusted or what it is there for? Any hints please. Cheers Mungo

Mungo,

The adjustment is via the rear axle and all you need to do is loosen the bolts to adjust the tension. cheers2

Can you post a picture Mungo? I was thinking of a linked chain that is supposed to support the back of the deck so it doesn't rock. We need to know what kind of chain it really is, and try to guess where it attaches if it is a support chain.

Thanks for that info but what do I adjust it to do? Is it supposed to be tight to stop forward movement of the cutting deck when in reverse? Cheers Mungo

Hi mungo,my rover has a chain (like a dog chain)from the rear of the deck and hooks up to part of the chassis directly above where it is attached to the deck,i am assuming that when you drive over a ditch or where the deck wheels dont touch the ground the chain takes up the slack so that the belts dont come off or excess pressure on the front deck mounting points.if you set the deck at its lowest height the chain should be slightly slack.if this does not make sense i will post photos of mine...ken

Hello MowerMan
Thanks for the post. Your description gives a good idea of what the chain was intended for and how it should be adjusted.Have to say it looks a very post hoc addition, after any serious design. Anyway, given the size of the wheels on the mower I wouldn't like to go over any serious ditches! Thanks for your help
Mungo
