Hi Everyone,
I am Arty and I love manicured lawns. I have a 590 that I want to restore and I would like to know if it is possible to fit a bolt on type of bottom blade to the existing riveted blade holder? If it is possible what parts would I need?

Hi Arty, and a warm welcome to the forum. Its always nice to have another Scotty owner on board. grin

Re: your query; the answer is yes you can, but you will have to remove the soleplate assembly (bottom blade holder) from the machine, remove the rivets and existing bottom blade.

You will need to drill and tap the original rivet holes in the soleplate to 5/16 Whitworth and purchase a set of five (5), 5/16 whit x 1/2" long countersunk metal thread blade screws. If the bottom blade is still serviceable, you will need to drill and countersink its holes accordingly, or if the blade is unserviceable purchase a new one which comes pre-drilled and countersunk already. wink

Arty, this would be a good time to remove the cylinder reel, check and replace the bearings if necessary, have the reel sharpened and the bottom blade finish ground to suit the sharpened cylinder. If you wanted, the engineer who spin-grinds your reel, could do the modifications to your soleplate for you. smile
Once again Arty, :welcome:

Hi Deejay, Thanks for the welcome. I also have a model 45 which I am currently using on my lawns. I decided to reco the 590 because I can mow right up to the corner in my garden. I am a little confused as to the number of holes in the sole plate. The sole plate that I have has 8 holes and the existing bottom blade is channel shaped, made from spring steel. Can I purchase a bottom blade with 8 holes? Or can I use a model 45 bottom blade?
