Hi Everyone, I just read all the forum Q&A on the B&S wiring problems, I have just changed the 8hp b& S on my rover ranger XC to a brand new intec 13.5hp, I have some wiring problems with the fuel solenoid, I think I figured out that the grey wire goes to 12v pos, but I am unable to figure out where the black wire goes to can anyone help please
A picture would help, Laurie. Are you talking about the solenoid itself? Any solenoid needs a positive and a negative, and on an American engine the negative will go to ground, sooner or later (it may go through a few safety switches on the way, depending on how the design engineer decided to do it: switches can be put in either the positive or negative lead). If there are only two wires to the solenoid, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out which is which (it should click when you connect the wires the right way around). However be sure these are fuel solenoid wires; you can make expensive mistakes connecting random wires with random polarities on an engine with electronic ignition.
Ok i have taken some photos but don't know how to load them so I will try to explain what I have done, new B& S 13.5hp model # 21B977 mounted on my Rover Ranger XC( with a few modifications to rear guards)from the old moter on the left side sitting inthe seat I have a yellow wire with a green stripe which I connected to the large red wire from the alternator The small black wire from the alternator I think is for 12v power (lights etc which there are none )I have a red wire with a white stripe comming from the mower harness & would like to know where it will go to the motor, from the other side there is a grey wire & a black wire comming from the fuel solenoid and the black wire goes to earth on the block, the grey wire goes to a twin connector and there is a black wire connected, where do these wires go to please Laurie
I think we will still need the pictures Laurie, and in any case, without them this thread will be useless to other members. The main problem is that the wire colours you have quoted do not match the Rover Rancher manual on this site. Perhaps there is a model mismatch, or your mower has been rewired. It would be a bad idea to proceed without either finding a manual that matches your wires, or tracing your wires with the correct manual in front of you. Expensive damage is likely if you make the wrong connections.
According to the manual, the original wiring of the mower itself (not the B&S engine) has these wires going to the engine: a ground wire from the starter solenoid negative terminal to engine ground (colour not specified); a red wire from the starter solenoid to the starter motor (to activate the starter when you operate the key switch); another red wire from the safety circuit that goes to the magneto (this is the only connection to the magneto, and according to the safety circuit diagram it is the ignition kill wire - in other words it is grounded when you need the engine to stop, and floating when you need the engine to go); a green/yellow wire from the key switch terminal L that goes to "the engine" according to the manual. Since it is the only wire that comes from the engine and goes to the key switch it seems to be the battery charging wire from the alternator; and finally a black/white wire from the headlight switch that goes to the alternator.
As I said, some of your colours don't match these, so you need to subscribe to the manuals section, download the manual, and trace your circuits. In my experience most of the people who come here with ride-on mower electrical problems have mowers that have had their wiring butchered. The only proper cure for this is to rewire the mower in line with the manual. This is not a difficult job, so long as you have the manual.
With regard to the float bowl solenoid on your new engine, all you need is a wire from the contact on your key switch which becomes live when you switch on the engine (this seems to be terminal L, or in other words the green/yellow wire) to the positive contact on the fuel solenoid, while ensuring that the negative contact on the fuel solenoid is grounded. Most likely the black wire will be the ground and the grey wire the positive, but you can check by briefly connecting it that way and listening for a click. Now to test it you will need a voltmeter or test light: with the green/yellow wire disconnected at the engine end, turn the key switch to engine on and check that it suddenly moves to plus 12V. Then do the same when you turn the key switch to start: it should go to plus 12V then as well. Finally, turn the key switch off and verify that the green yellow wire loses its positive voltage.
OKey Dokey, I have the beast running,turn the key to on then start everything works fine, battery is getting charged ok,the only problems I have now is where the red / white wire goes to, it comes from the single pole on a 5 pole ignition switch & why won't the motor shut down when I turn the key off I have to disconnect the fuel solenoid and it stops eventually and I still have to work out accelerator system PS can someone tell me how to load photos please any ideas anyone Cheers Laurie
Laurie, I load photos (so long as they are very small files) by switching to full reply screen, and using the file manager.
If the engine does not stop when you switch off, the magneto kill wire is not being grounded. According to the manual, on the mower this is a red wire running from the M terminal on the 5 terminal key switch, through an assortment of safety switches, to the magneto of the engine. You keep describing it as a red/white wire, but the manual says it is plain red. Have you connected the magneto kill wire on the new engine? If you have connected the engine kill wire to the red-white wire and it does not stop when you switch if off, there is an error in the safety circuit. Just find the wire on the engine that leads to the magneto, and look at what you've done with the free end of it.
Normally with B&S engines, you just remove the cooling air cowl so that you can see the flywheel. You'll find the magneto mounted very close to the flywheel, so it can pick up pulses from a magnet in the outside of the flywheel. The magneto should have the spark plug lead coming out of it, plus one other lead: the kill wire. I'm not familiar with the Intek engines - please post a picture of your magneto and its surroundings when you take the cover off, for the benefit of many members here. It is possible there will be a terminal for the kill wire rather than an actual wire. Grounding the kill wire short circuits the magneto primary and stops the spark. This is more or less a universal technique for stopping small modern magneto engines (though there are engines that rely on an external 12V supply and a flywheel-timed coil ignition system - but do not apply 12V to your B&S magneto kill wire, or you will fry the magneto).
